I’m looking to install a dash cam in my 911, but I’m a bit nervous about messing with the electronics. Since the fuse box is tucked away in the footwell, I want a setup that is straightforward to hardwire without needing to strip half the interior. I’m specifically looking for a model with a clean parking mode cable that won't trigger any battery discharge warnings. Has anyone had success with a specific brand that fits perfectly behind the rearview mirror without blocking the sensor? I’ve looked at BlackVue and Vantrue, but I’m curious which one you found easiest to tuck the wires into the A-pillar. Which model would you recommend for a DIY install that stays hidden and reliable?
Check out the Rennlist forums for some killer wiring guides, they're literally a lifesaver for 911 owners. I was so nervous about the battery drain too, but you should compare these two options:
* BlackVue DR970X-2CH Plus 4K Dash Cam vs Vantrue N4 Pro 3-Channel 4K Dash Cam
Basically, the BlackVue is way easier to hide behind the mirror, but I think the Vantrue has better image quality? Plus, definitely grab a BlackVue Power Magic Pro or a Ciglow Dash Cam Hardwire Kit to keep that battery safe. gl!
Sooo I actually just went through this with my 992. You might find this useful—there is a great resource at the BlackboxMyCar blog that literally breaks down the best low-power setups for German cars to avoid that annoying battery drain warning. Honestly, I'd skip the ones mentioned already and look at the Thinkware U3000 4K UHD Dual-Channel Dash Cam instead.
I went with this because the radar sensor is a GAME CHANGER for the Porsche battery. Basically, instead of the camera running 24/7 in parking mode, the radar wakes it up before an impact even happens. Plus, the cabling is way easier to tuck into the A-pillar than the Vantrue stuff. It fits perfectly behind the mirror too. It's a bit more expensive, but worth it for the peace of mind imo! gl with the install!
^ This. Also, honestly, I've been a 911 owner for over a decade and I've had such bad luck with the usual recommendations. I really wanted those high-end brands to work but I was pretty disappointed with how cluttered the windshield looked. Tucking wires into the A-pillar makes me so nervous because of the airbags and potential rattles... it's never as easy as the YouTube videos make it look. After trying a few setups, here is what I found:
Subbing for updates
@Reply #7 - good point! Honestly, the rattle thing is so real. Porsches are built so tight that any tiny loose wire sounds like a jackhammer once you get the revs up. Ngl it reminds me of when my brother tried a DIY install on his old 997. He spent like six hours upside down in that footwell with a headlamp on, just swearing at the fuse box while I sat there with a beer watching the show. He finally got it all tucked in and it looked super clean, totally hidden... then he took it out for a spirited drive on some twisty backroads. Every time he hit a corner hard or hit a bump, he could hear this tiny click-clack coming from the dash. It drove him so insane that he ended up ripping the whole thing out three days later cuz he couldnt stand the noise during his track runs. He actually sold the unit to a neighbor for half price just to get it out of his sight. I think he still has a piece of trim that doesnt quite sit flush to this day lol. Still makes me laugh thinking about him fuming over a 2mm wire...
Honestly, I've been there and I feel u, the 911 footwell is a total pain. In my experience, you should just go with any BlackVue... basically they're the easiest to hide behind the mirror and the wiring is super thin, so it actually tucks into the A-pillar without much effort. I've tried many over the years and their parking mode cables are super reliable without killing the battery, you know?
