I just got this TRX for some desert trips near Phoenix but I am honestly so overwhelmed. I have literally no idea what I'm doing and I'm scared of getting stuck. Sorry if this is a stupid question but what accessories are actually essential for off-roading in this truck? I dont want to buy useless stuff...

Essential desert equipment requires reliable recovery tools and air management.

  • ARB Tred Pro Recovery Boards Heavy Duty
  • Viair 400P Portable Air Compressor 150 PSI Adjusting tire pressure is vital.

Just seeing this now and honestly you're gonna have a blast! The TRX is literally a desert predator but man, it weighs a ton. If you get buried in the soft stuff, you need gear that can actually handle the mass. Standard straps wont cut it for a truck this heavy, ngl. Here is what I consider mandatory for the desert:

  • Bubba Rope Power Stretch Recovery Rope 7/8 inch 28600 lbs for smooth kinetic extractions
  • Factor 55 HitchLink 2.0 Receiver Shackle Mount to give you a bomb-proof rear recovery point
  • Midland MXT275 MicroMobile GMRS Two-Way Radio 15 Watt so you aren't stranded without signal I love the kinetic rope approach because desert sand is incredibly grabby. A static strap gives a violent jolt that can bend parts, but a kinetic rope like the Bubba Rope acts like a giant rubber band. It uses the pulling trucks momentum to gently but firmly slingshot you out. Its way safer for your truck's chassis! Also, don't rely on your phone out past Scottsdale. That Midland radio is amazing because its tiny but has enough power to reach help miles away. Seriously, having the right recovery points and comms will save your life. Get this stuff before you even think about hitting the dunes!

Unfortunately, people often focus on the flashy recovery gear and forget the basic safety stuff that actually saves your wallet or your life. Ive had issues with standard fire extinguishers rattling around and losing pressure in the desert heat, which is just dangerous and honestly pretty disappointing when you actually need them. Instead of the heavy canisters, I suggest getting an Element E50 Fire Extinguisher. It is way more reliable for a truck that runs as hot as the TRX and it never expires. You also need to think about the actual process of airing down. Doing it manually is a chore. I used some cheap knock-off deflators before and they were not as good as expected, basically a waste of money because they never stayed calibrated. Spend the extra bit on Staun Tyre Deflaters 6-30 PSI to save your back and your time. One last thing... the stock jack is pretty much useless in soft sand. It is way too unstable for a 6,000 pound truck. Look into the Safe Jack Bottle Jack Recovery Kit with 6 Ton Jack. It is a methodical way to ensure you can actually change a tire without the truck falling over. It seems expensive at first, but its cheaper than a crushed rotor.
