I finally got my TRX and want to prep it for some serious desert runs. I’m considering a chase rack and some high-output LED pods for the A-pillars. Are there specific winches that fit the factory bumper? I’d love recommendations on recovery gear that won't clutter the bed. What are your top off-road must-haves?

Seconding the hidden mount! I've had issues with pricey gear... Comparison: Smittybilt X2O GEN2 10000lb Winch vs Rough Country PRO Series 12000lb Winch. Smitty is better value and lasts longer! gl

Had a moment to think about this more and honestly, the TRX tax out there is pretty wild. I spent way too many hours looking at data sheets before I started my build because I wanted to find the sweet spot where you get pro-level specs without just paying for a logo. Here is what I found after doing a bunch of market research:

  • For lights, I looked at a bunch of photometric charts and ended up with Diode Dynamics SS3 Max LED Pods for the pillars. The output-to-cost ratio is way better than the boutique brands and they still have the heavy-duty heatsinks you need for desert heat.
  • On the winch front, I did a deep dive into motor specs and gear ratios. Well actually, the Superwinch Tiger Shark 11500 SR is a total beast for the money. It fits most hidden mounts and has a really solid weather seal for a mid-tier price point.
  • To keep the bed clean, I found that BuiltRight Industries Bedside Rack Panels are the most cost-effective way to mount gear. You dont need a massive chase rack that kills your rearview - these let you use cheap generic quick-fists to hold your shovels and stuff.
  • Recovery gear is where people overspend the most. I just buy industrial grade soft shackles from rigging supply shops. If they are rated for heavy lifting in a warehouse, they will handle a truck pull just fine and they cost way less than the flashy off-road brands.

I totally agree on the hidden mount - keeping that winch out of the elements and protected from rocks is huge for reliability. I’m still kinda learning the ropes with my TRX, but I've realized that if you're going deep into the desert, you really gotta prioritize safety gear so you actually make it back! - Honestly, just get any recovery kit from Factor 55. You can’t go wrong with their stuff since it’s built like a tank and way safer than the cheap hooks.
- You’re definitely gonna need a way to air back up. Just grab an on-board or portable compressor from ARB - basically everyone uses them because they just work.
- Maybe think about comms too? I’d just get any radio setup from Rugged Radios so you aren't stranded if your cell service drops out. Is there a specific way to mount those compressors without taking up bed space? I'm still trying to figure that part out myself lol.

So, desert runs are basically a different beast because of the high-speed vibrations and heat buildup. Honestly, most people forget how much stuff rattles loose out there... it's a real issue. If you wanna keep the factory bumper but need a winch, iirc the Vice Design TRX Hidden Winch Mount is the gold standard because it tucks everything away perfectly. Pair it with a Warn Zeon 12-S Platinum Winch and youre golden. For lights, you gotta go with Baja Designs Squadron Pro LED Light Pods for the A-pillars—they LITERALLY cut through dust like nothing else. To keep the bed from getting cluttered, definitely look into the BuiltRight Industries Bed Side Rack System. It uses the factory points so you can bolt your gear to the walls instead of letting it slide around. It’s a solid setup that’s worked well for me. Hope that helps, gl with the build!
