Hey everyone! I finally took the plunge and picked up a brand new Ram 1500 TRX in Flame Red. This truck is an absolute beast right off the lot, and those Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks are incredible, but I’m looking to gear up for some serious trail time. I’m planning a trip out to Moab and some high-speed desert runs, so I want to make sure I’m prepared before I get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve been looking at a few things like upgraded skid plates since the factory ones seem a bit thin for heavy-duty rocks, and I’m definitely considering a bed-mounted spare tire carrier because I don’t want to be caught without a full-size backup. I’m also torn on lighting—should I go with a radius bar over the windshield or stick to some high-output pods in the bumper pockets?

My main concern is keeping the truck functional as a daily driver while making it 'bulletproof' off-road. I’ve got a budget of about $3,000 to start with for initial mods. For those of you who have been beating on your TRXs for a while, what are the absolute 'must-have' accessories that you'd recommend first? Are there any specific recovery kits or rock sliders that fit the TRX body lines perfectly?

Yo, congrats on the Flame Red! Seriously, such a sick color. Been thinking about your question and $3k is a solid starting point if you're smart about it. > I’m also torn on lighting—should I go with a radius bar over the windshield or stick to some high-output pods in the bumper pockets? Honestly? Skip the radius bar. A Rigid Industries 54-inch RDS-Series Pro looks amazing but the wind noise is ANNOYING for a daily driver. I think ur better off with Baja Designs Squadron Pro Amber pods in the bumper pockets. They're way cheaper and actually better for desert dust. For Moab, you NEED armor. Comparing the two, I'd prioritize White Knuckle Off Road TRX Rock Sliders over skids first. Body damage is highkey expensive! Also, the Mopar TRX Bed-Mounted Spare Tire Carrier is the cleanest fit for that full-size backup, though it eats bed space. If you stick to pods and sliders, you'll stay under budget easily. GL! 👍

In my experience, you’ve definitely got the right idea starting with protection. Yo, congrats on the Flame Red TRX! Honestly, that color is sick. I’ve been beating on mine for a year now and I totally get the "bulletproof" goal. For your Moab trip, I’d highkey prioritize the sliders and skids first. I actually dinged my factory ones on a trail run and it was sooo stressful... basically replaced them immediately with a beefier setup. About the lighting—I tried a roof bar but the whistle on the highway drove me crazy since I daily mine too. I switched to high-output pods in the bumper and it’s plenty of light without the noise, you know? Definitely go with the bed-mounted spare tho. Digging a tire out from under the truck when ur buried in sand is literally the worst experience ever lol. My current setup has survived some rough desert runs and I’m super satisfied with how it handles the abuse. gl with the build!!

@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, the wind whistle from a roof bar is the absolute worst part of a daily driver... it will drive you crazy on the highway. Just skip it. If you want reliability out in Moab or the desert, you really need to think about air management and recovery gear first. I swear by the ARB Twin Air Compressor High Performance mounted under the hood or in the bed. You are gonna be airing down for the rocks and you dont want to be that guy waiting an hour for a tiny portable pump to fill those 35s back up. Also, for those high-speed desert runs, definitely grab the S&B Filters Particle Separator. It is amazing for keeping the dust out of your intake when youre following buddies through the silt, and it saves your filters big time. For recovery, dont trust the cheap stuff. Pick up an ARB RK11 Essentials Recovery Kit. It is built like a tank and has saved my skin more than once. You got a beast of a truck, just make sure you can get it home if things get hairy!
