I’m incredibly stoked about the R2 announcement, especially with those fold-flat seats and the roll-down rear window! Since it’s more compact than the R1S, I’m already trying to figure out the best camping setup. I’m specifically looking for recommendations on rooftop tents that won't overwhelm the smaller roofline and interior mattresses designed for that flat-folding space. Has anyone heard rumors about dedicated modular kitchen units or 12V fridges that fit perfectly in the R2’s trunk or frunk? I want to stay organized without losing all my legroom. What specific camping accessories are at the top of your wishlist to make the R2 the ultimate adventure rig?

Seconding the recommendation above regarding that fridge!! Budget is such a huge factor when youre kitting out a new rig from scratch. While we all want the fancy factory stuff, third-party gear is usually way more bang for your buck.

Since youre worried about the smaller roofline on the R2, i would suggest looking at a slim profile hardshell tent. A heavy, bulky setup will tank your range and might look a bit goofy on the R2's dimensions. For mattresses, i've learned over the years that specialized 'car' pads are usually overpriced... basically just look for a self-inflating one that matches the interior width.

Here are some budget-friendly ideas to keep you organized:

* iKamper Skycamp Mini 3.0 - It's compact and wont hang over the edges, though it is a bit of an investment.
* Luno Life Self-Inflating Air Mattress - These guys usually make custom fits for EVs and they're super comfy for two people.
* Jackery Explorer 500 Portable Power Station - Great for running lights or charging gear without tapping the R2's main battery too hard.

Just be careful with the total weight on the glass roof! We dont have the official specs yet, so i'd wait before pulling the trigger on anything super heavy. Honestly, keeping it simple is usually better for these smaller SUVs anyway. good luck!!

Seconding the recommendation above about watching that weight! Honestly, after years of overlanding, I've learned that overloading a smaller roofline is a huge safety risk for rollovers. I'm actually gonna suggest the Thule Tepui Foothill Low-Profile Rooftop Tent because it only takes up half the rack, leaving room for recovery gear. For the interior, I'm super satisfied with the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Self-Inflating Mattress—it's highkey the most reliable sleep you'll get without killing your back. Just make sure whatever kitchen you get is secured tight cuz loose gear is a literal projectile if you hit a bump too hard!

Ok so, I'm super stoked too, but basically we gotta think about safety with a smaller rig like the R2. Before you buy anything, are you planning on solo camping mostly or do you need space for two people? Also, what's your total weight limit for the roof? I've found that overloading smaller EVs can really mess with the handling and range, so honestly, I'd be careful about those heavy hardshell tents...

Quick question - before I dive into the tech specs, are you planning to use the accessory port for a kitchen or just stick to the frunk for storage?? Budget-wise, I'm honestly looking at the BougeRV 12V 30 Quart Portable Refrigerator since it's usually under $300 and fits smaller spaces perfectly without breaking the bank like some high-end brands.

Adding my two cents here because honestly, the lifestyle tax on these new EV accessories is getting completely out of hand. It drives me crazy how companies just slap a pretty logo on generic gear and charge a 40% markup just because we drive a Rivian. I've been overlanding for a long time and seen quality absolutely tank while prices go through the roof. Most of these modular systems are just over-engineered ways to take your money and add unnecessary weight... it's a scam. I usually stick to these for actual info instead of marketing fluff:

  • Rivian Owners Forum technical sections
  • Expedition Portal gear dimensions
  • Adventure Rider packing threads Its a total headache trying to find stuff that isnt just overpriced junk nowadays. We really need those exact R2 interior dimensions soon or everyones gonna end up with a garage full of stuff that doesnt fit the floor plan... frustrating.

Stumbled upon this last night and thought id chime in from a DIY perspective. Like someone mentioned, weight is king on these smaller EVs. Instead of those overpriced factory kitchens, I'm gonna build a custom slide-out tray for the R2 trunk using heavy-duty drawer slides. It's way cheaper and lets you customize the layout for your own bins. For the fridge, the Alpicool C15 Portable Freezer 16 Quart is a solid bet because it's tiny enough to fit in the frunk or a tight corner without hogging space. If you want a mattress that actually lasts, go for the Hest Foamy Camping Mattress. I've tried many setups over the years and solid foam beats air every single time for comfort, plus it won't leak in the middle of the night. For the roof, check out the Roofnest Meadowlark Rooftop Tent. It's only 90 lbs which is great for the R2's range compared to those 160lb hardshells. Honestly, keeping it simple and light is better than over-engineering everything.
