Hey everyone! I recently picked up a newer Subaru Impreza hatchback, and I’m absolutely loving the drive so far. However, I’ve run into a bit of a dilemma regarding the best way to transport my bikes. I’m an avid rider, usually heading out to the trails at least twice a week, and I want a setup that is secure but won't ruin the car's aesthetic.
I’m currently torn between installing a hitch receiver or just going with a roof rack setup. Since the Impreza sits quite a bit lower to the ground than a Crosstrek or Forester, I’m a little worried about ground clearance issues if I go with a hitch-mounted platform rack, especially when driving over speed bumps or up steep driveways. On the other hand, I’m concerned that lifting my heavy mountain bike onto the roof might lead to some accidental scratches on the paint or a significant drop in my MPG during highway commutes.
I’ve been looking at brands like Thule and Kuat, but I’m overwhelmed by the options. For those of you who drive an Impreza, what setup has worked best for you? Do you find a 1.25-inch hitch rack to be stable enough, or is a roof-mounted tray the way to go for this specific car?
Hi there! I totally get where you're coming from. I'm fairly new to the whole biking scene, but I've been through this exact struggle with my own Impreza hatch recently. Honestly, I'm so happy with how my setup turned out! Before I dive into what I picked, it's worth noting that the Impreza's lower stance really changes the math compared to a SUV. If you go with a roof rack, you're constantly fighting wind resistance and the fear of a garage door mishap. But a hitch rack? Well, ground clearance is a valid worry, especially if you have a steep driveway like mine. Anyway, back to your question!
For your situation, I would suggest going the hitch route but being very specific about the rack. I ended up installing the Curt 11465 Class 1 Trailer Hitch on mine. It’s a 1.25-inch receiver, and honestly, I've found it to be super stable for two bikes. To solve the clearance issue, I went with the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 1.25-inch Hitch Rack. What’s great about this one is that it tilts up and sits a bit higher than cheaper tray racks, so I haven't scraped a speed bump yet!
I was really worried about the 1.25-inch hitch being "wobbly," but with the Sherpa’s cam system, it’s rock solid. I seriously love that I don't have to lift my heavy mountain bike over my head and risk scratching that beautiful Subaru paint. It works well, looks sleek, and my MPG has stayed pretty much the same. Good luck with the choice!
Honestly, I totally get the ground clearance anxiety! When I first got my Impreza, I went through three different setups before finding the sweet spot between cost and function. I initially tried a cheap trunk rack, but it felt flimsy and messed with the paint. For your situation, I would suggest looking into the RockyMounts MonoRail Solo for a hitch setup.
It’s a 1.25-inch platform rack that is super compact and actually sits slightly higher than most other options, which helps a ton with those steep driveways. If you're worried about the 1.25-inch stability, don't be—as long as you use a threaded hitch pin, it's solid. Another great budget-friendly move is the 1UP USA Quik Rack Single. It's made of aluminum, so it’s light enough that it won't kill your MPG or drag the back end down too much. Both of these keep the bikes secure without the hassle of lifting them onto the roof after a long, exhausting ride! Hope this helps!
For your situation, I recommend looking beyond the usual hitch racks. I honestly had a pretty frustrating experience with a hitch setup on my Impreza because of the low clearance. I constantly scraped on driveways, which was a total nightmare.
Instead, I suggest these technical alternatives:
• **Roof-mounted tray:** The Thule UpRide Roof Bike Rack is solid because it never touches the frame, so no paint damage. It’s more aerodynamic than most, though MPG still takes a small hit.
• **Premium Roof Option:** If you want stability, the Yakima HighRoad Wheel-On Mount is incredibly secure for heavy MTBs.
Personally, I'd go roof-mounted to save your bumper! Good luck!
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
Quick reply while I have a sec... Ive been through a dozen setups on my Subies and honestly it just comes down to what you hate more: lifting a heavy bike or hearing that soul-crushing scrape on a steep driveway. If you want the best quality, honestly just go with 1UP and you cant go wrong. They are basically bulletproof and look way cleaner than most of the plastic stuff out there. Thule is also a solid bet if you want something that just works and has a ton of accessories available. If you decide to go roof, Yakima makes some great gear that wont whistle too much on the highway. For an Impreza, a hitch is always nicer for MPG but yeah, that ground clearance is a real pain... Just grab any tray style from a big brand and youll be fine, they are all way better than trunk racks anyway.
