Which accessories are best for a Subaru Ascent family road trip?

Hey everyone! We recently traded in our smaller SUV for a new Subaru Ascent, and we are absolutely loving the extra space so far. But the real test is coming up next month: we’re planning a 12-day road trip from Oregon down through the California coast with our three kids (ages 5, 8, and 11) and our Golden Retriever. It’s going to be a very full house, to say the least!

Since this is our first major long-distance haul in the Ascent, I’m trying to figure out the best accessory setup to keep the cabin organized and everyone comfortable. I’ve been browsing the Subaru parts catalog and some aftermarket sites, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. We really want to maximize our storage without making the interior feel like a cramped cave for the kids.

I’m specifically looking for advice on a few things. First, the roof situation—does anyone have a preference between the Thule cargo boxes versus a hitch-mounted cargo carrier? I’m a bit worried about the wind noise and the hit to our MPG with a roof box, but I love the idea of keeping the hitch free for our bike rack. Second, what are your thoughts on interior protection? Are the heavy-duty all-weather floor liners and the seat-back protectors essential for kid-related crumbs and spills, or are there better third-party versions than the OEM ones? I’m also really curious about cargo management—has anyone found a specific trunk organizer or net that works well when the third row is partially folded down?

We’re looking to spend around $700–$1,000 to get everything "road-trip ready," so I want to prioritize the "must-haves" over the "nice-to-haves." I’ve already got a basic first-aid kit and some tablet mounts, but I feel like I’m missing those "game-changer" items that make a 2,000-mile trip actually enjoyable for a big family.

For those of you who have taken your Ascent on long family adventures, which specific accessories turned out to be lifesavers, and is there anything you bought that ended up being a total waste of money?

Sooo, I've been there! We did a similar trip in our Ascent last year and honestly, it's all about that balance. For the roof vs hitch debate, I'd say the roof box is the winner for you. If you want to keep the hitch free for bikes, the Thule Motion XT XL Rooftop Cargo Carrier is basically the gold standard. Yeah, you'll lose some MPG (we lost like 2 or 3), but keeping the interior from feeling like a cave is worth it, especially with a Golden Retriever in the mix!

For protection, skip the OEM floor mats. The WeatherTech FloorLiner HP for Subaru Ascent is much better at catching spills and dirt... it's just more heavy-duty tbh. But, I actually recommend the Subaru OEM Rear Seat Back Protector for the seats because they fit perfectly and dont slide around when you're folding the 3rd row. Total should be right around your $1k budget if you shop around! gl!

Seconding that! iirc Maxliner Custom Fit Floor Mats 3 Row Set is same-spec TPE for $100 less. Plus, get the Vailge Dog Car Seat Cover... unfortunately, the OEM ones just don't stay put.

Just sharing my experience: I chose WeatherTech FloorLiner HP for the superior lip height. It's highkey better at containing liquids so you don't ruin the floorboards on long hauls... definitely worth it!

Regarding what #1 said about 'Sooo, I've been there! We did a similar trip', i've gotta chime in on the hardware foundation because the box is only half the battle. In my experience, the real killer for MPG and noise isnt just the box size, its the turbulence from high-profile crossbars. Most folks just use the factory Subaru bars, but they sit high and create a lot of drag. To keep the cabin quiet for the kids, look at the Thule WingBar Edge Black Crossbars. These have a much lower profile and an aerodynamic shape that really cuts down on that jet engine sound at highway speeds. Since you've got a Golden Retriever and a full load, skip the cargo nets. They're basically useless if you have to slam on the brakes with a 70-pound dog in the back. I'd go with:

  • Travall Guard Dog Barrier TDG1622 because it’s vehicle-specific and wont rattle like the cheap ones.
  • Viair 88P Portable Compressor Kit since tire pressure is critical when youre hauling that much weight.
  • High Road Stash Crate for the trunk to keep things from sliding around when the third row is down. Ngl, the OEM seat protectors are kinda meh compared to the Canvasback Subaru Ascent Cargo Liner if you want real liquid protection from the dog and the kids. Its a bit more of an investment but the reliability over a 2,000-mile trip is worth it. Plus, it covers the entire cargo floor and the back of the seats much better than the plastic Subaru versions.
