Hey everyone! We recently joined the Volkswagen family with a new Atlas, and while the interior space is impressive, we’re quickly realizing that with three kids and a dog, our trunk space vanishes the moment we pack for a weekend camping trip. I’m looking to invest in a solid roof rack and cargo setup, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options out there.
I’ve been looking at the OEM crossbars from the dealership, but I’ve heard some mixed reviews regarding wind noise at highway speeds. I’m also looking at the Thule WingBar Edge and the Yakima JetStream, but I’m worried about clearance for the panoramic sunroof. I’d hate to install something that prevents us from tilting the glass or, worse, causes a clearance issue when the rack is loaded down.
We’re specifically looking for a cargo box that’s aerodynamic—since the Atlas isn't exactly a fuel-sipper—and maybe a compatible bike rack attachment for later this summer. Budget-wise, I’m hoping to stay under $1,000 for the bars and the box combined if possible. For those of you who have been road-tripping in your Atlas, which specific roof rack brands and cargo accessories have you found to be the most durable and quietest for long hauls?
Seconding the recommendation above about glass clearance! I also agree with the aerodynamic focus from before. For a budget setup: 1. Malone AirFlow2 Aluminum Cross Rail System vs Yakima JetStream Crossbars. Malone is way cheaper and sits higher, which is safer for the sunroof tilt. 2. JEGS Rooftop Cargo Carrier 18 Cubic Foot. It's basically the best value box for the Atlas with its 110lb capacity. Just don't forget the total garage height... gl!
Ok so I'm happy with my setup but honestly, what's your total garage clearance? Also, are you gonna need a high dynamic weight capacity for those bikes later??
Mounting height dictates glass clearance. My setup:
- T-slot style
- Aerodynamic Or try raised rails... i almost hit my glass cuz the clearance was so tight when tilted!
