Ugh I am honestly so over searching for roof racks for my ID.4. Every site says something different about fitment and my ski trip to Tahoe is literally in two weeks so I’m panicking a bit. Im torn between the Thule WingBar Edge and the Yakima JetStream.
The Thule looks way better but man $600+ is a lot to swallow right now especially with the holiday spending. Yakima is closer to my $450 budget but I keep reading about wind noise being a total pain on EVs. I also saw some generic ones on Amazon but that feels risky for a 5 hour drive? Which one should I actually go with...
Just saw this and had to jump in! Honestly, I disagree that you gotta drop $600 for a solid setup. For a Tahoe run, the factory bars are fantastic!
^ This. Also, i honestly had a pretty bad experience trying to save money with those generic Amazon kits. Unfortunately, they just arent as good as expected when it comes to the locking mechanisms. They felt super flimsy at highway speeds and i wouldnt risk my gear or my ID.4 on them for a long drive to Tahoe. I actually had issues with noise on the Yakima setups too, they whistled way more than i liked which was a huge letdown for the price. If the Thule price tag is making you wince, you should check out the Malone AirFlow2 Aluminum Aero Cross Rail System 50 inch. They are surprisingly quiet and the build quality is way better than the no-name stuff. Ngl, the installation is kind of a pain, but it leaves you plenty of cash for lift tickets. Just make sure you tighten everything down twice before you hit the road... safety first!
Honestly I totally get the panic! I was in the same boat last year before our big winter trip. Safety is everything when you are hauling expensive gear on the highway at 70mph. I looked at the cheap ones too but then I saw a video of one snapping... no thanks!! Ngl I ended up biting the bullet and getting the Thule WingBar Edge Crossbars for Flush Rails with the Thule Fit Kit 186009 and it is seriously amazing. Like, the peace of mind is worth every single penny. It fits the ID.4 rails so perfectly and feels like it is literally part of the car! If you are worried about the budget, you could look for the Yakima JetStream Crossbars 50 inch Black but please stay away from the random Amazon brands for a 5 hour drive to Tahoe. Its just not worth the stress of wondering if your skis are gonna fly off into traffic! The Thule is super quiet too which is fantastic because the ID.4 is so silent already. I love how it looks, it is so sleek! You wont regret spending a bit more for the quality and reliability. Have a blast in the snow, Tahoe is gonna be incredible! TL;DR: Go with the Thule WingBar Edge Crossbars for Flush Rails. The safety and perfect fitment are worth the extra money for a long trip. Dont risk the cheap generic ones!
Checking in late. Honestly i've been super satisfied with my setup and it has never let me down on mountain runs. Safety is always my top priority so I totally get the hesitation about the generic stuff... total nightmare if something shifts at highway speeds. Before I suggest a specific alternative, are you planning to use a cargo box or just a standard ski carrier like the Thule SnowPack Extender? The total weight and profile will definitely affect that wind noise you're worried about. If you're looking for a solid middle ground, i've been really happy with the Thule WingBar Evo 118 Black Aluminum paired with the Thule Evo Flush Rail. It's a bit more robust than the Edge series and feels way more secure imo. One quick tip tho: no matter which brand you pick, make sure you trim the rubber vortex strips perfectly to fill every gap in the T-slot. That usually kills 90% of the whistling people complain about. Let me know if you need the exact torque specs, I can go dig up my manual for you.
Saw this thread a bit late but ngl I had to jump in because I have been through this exact headache with my ID.4. Totally agree with the previous post about avoiding those $600 setups... its just highway robbery for some aluminum bars. Unfortunately, ive found that even the high-end Thule stuff can be a letdown sometimes. I had issues with whistling on my last set because the rubber stripping didnt seat right. On an EV, you hear every single little whistle and it drives me crazy on long drives to the mountains. If you want to stay under that $450 mark without risking your skis on cheap junk, here is what id actually do:
Yo!! So excited for your Tahoe trip, seriously jealous of the snow you're gonna get! Quick question before I weigh in though... are you planning on leaving these bars on all year round or just popping them on for the ski season? I ask because I'm a huge DIY guy and honestly I spent my entire Sunday messing around in my garage trying to fix a rattle in my driver side door panel. My youngest somehow managed to wedge a Lego piece into the window track and it was driving me absolutely insane every time I hit a bump. Ended up having to pop the whole interior trim off which is way scarier than it looks because those plastic clips feel like they're gonna snap if you even breathe on them too hard! While I was at it I found like three bucks in change and a petrified french fry under the seat... kind of a win? Anyway lol totally went off on a tangent there sorry!!
