We just got a 2024 Atlas and have a huge family trip to Yellowstone in three weeks but I realized our bags wont fit with the dog in the back. I am so lost looking at Thule and Yakima and I dont even know if my car has the right parts? There are silver bars on the roof but do I need more bars to go across them?
Im really scared of buying something that falls off on the highway or ruins the sunroof. My budget is about $900 for everything and I need something easy because I have zero tools. Which racks and boxes actually fit this car without being a total disaster to set up?

Honestly, I had a bit of a rough time finding a perfect setup. Unfortunately, trying to get a full name-brand kit under $900 is basically impossible if you want the high-end stuff. I had issues with the official VW bars too... they were noisy and just not as good as expected for the price. To stay safe and on budget, I recommend this combo:
- Yakima TimberLine Towers for Raised Rails – These are super easy and wrap right around your silver rails.
- Yakima JetStream Crossbars Black 60in – These are aerodynamic so they dont whistle as much.
- SportRack Vista XL Rear Opening Cargo Box 18cu ft – This is the best value. It is owned by Thule but costs half as much. Mount it all a few days early tho. Doing it in a rush is never fun... and make sure the box is forward enough so the trunk doesn't hit it!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I disagree that you need to spend a fortune for safety. I've tried many setups over the years and these two tower systems are my top picks for the Atlas:
- Yakima TimberLine Towers: Way more secure than generic clamps. These wont budge at 70mph.
- Malone AirFlow2 Aluminum Cross Rails: Solid budget alternative that fits those silver rails without any extra tools. Personally, I'd go Yakima for the peace of mind tho... nothing beats that grip.

Those silver bars are just roof rails, so you definitely need crossbars. Your $900 budget is decent, but name brands get pricey fast. Watch out for these common issues:
- Sunroof clearance for the mounting clamps
- Rear hatch opening space
- Rail weight capacity Honestly, avoid the super cheap universal clamps. They tend to slide or scratch the finish if they don't fit the Atlas rails perfectly.

I had high hopes for the factory bars on my Atlas, but unfortunately, the wind noise was a disaster. They werent as good as expected. You definitely need crossbars for those silver rails.
- Try Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars for a quieter ride.
- The Yakima SkyBox 16 Cargo Box fits bags perfectly. I had issues with cheap clamps scratching my rails, so dont skimp there.
