Hey everyone! I’ve been driving my Volkswagen ID.4 for a few months now and absolutely love it, but we’re planning a longer cross-country road trip this summer and realized the trunk space is a bit tight for all our camping gear. I’m in the market for a solid roof rack and cargo box setup, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options out there.
Since the ID.4 is an EV, my biggest concern is how much a bulky box will impact my range. I’ve read some conflicting reports about efficiency drops, so I’m definitely looking for something aerodynamic that won't destroy my mi/kWh. Also, I have the Pro S trim with the panoramic glass roof, and I’m a little nervous about clearance and weight limits. Has anyone had issues with specific brands interfering with the glass or creating an annoying amount of wind noise at highway speeds?
I’ve been looking at the Thule WingBar Evo versus the Yakima options, but I'm also curious if the OEM bars from the VW parts department are actually the better way to go. For those of you already running a setup, how was the installation process, and did you notice a significant hit to your charging stops?
What specific roof rack and cargo box combo would you recommend for the ID.4 that balances storage capacity with minimal range impact?
Honestly, the Volkswagen ID.4 Base Carrier Bars are the way to go. I got mine for about $300, which is SO much cheaper than Thule or Yakima. I've paired them with the Thule Force XT L Rooftop Cargo Box and it's worked great. You'll see like a 10% hit to ur efficiency, but it's worth it for the extra space. Clearance isn't an issue with the glass roof, so dont worry too much!
Honestly, if you wanna save cash, check out the SportRack Horizon Alpine Cargo Box. It's way cheaper than Thule and its low-profile shape is basically perfect for maintaining ID.4 efficiency. Pair that with some used Yakima JetStream Crossbars and you're golden. I've seen this setup hit only about a 10-12% range penalty at 70mph. Plus, no issues with the glass roof clearance!
Seconded!
Ok so, I'm super cautious about that panoramic roof. I've heard horror stories about glass cracking if weight isnt distributed right. Unfortunately, I had issues with noise on my first try, so safety and reliability are everything here.
Option A: Thule WingBar Edge. Pros: Super quiet and aerodynamic. Cons: Very low profile, might hit the glass if clamps are too big.
Option B: Yakima SkyLine Towers with JetStream Bars. Pros: Really sturdy. Cons: Bulky, which hurts range more.
Option C: Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar. Pros: Budget friendly. Cons: Can be fiddly to install.
Best choice imo is the Thule bars with the Inno Shadow 16 Cargo Box. It's sleek and helps with range anxiety, though your mi/kWh will still drop. Ngl, it's disappointing how much it hits the battery. Just please check your manual for weight limits because overloading ur roof is a bad idea with all that glass. gl!
