Hey everyone! I recently joined the VW family with a 2023 Taos, and so far, it’s been a fantastic daily driver. However, as we’re getting closer to summer, I’m realizing that the interior space is a bit tight for all the gear my family likes to haul around. We’ve got a couple of mountain bikes and a massive Thule cargo box from our old SUV that I’m dying to get mounted, but I’m feeling a bit stuck on which direction to go for the roof rack system.

My Taos has the flush side rails, and I’m trying to find the best balance between a rugged look and aerodynamic performance. I’ve looked into the official VW OEM base carrier bars, but I’ve read a few forum posts mentioning that they sit a bit high and can create a fair amount of wind noise once you hit highway speeds. On the other hand, I’ve been eyeing the Thule WingBar Evo and the Yakima JetStream, but the price jump is pretty significant, and I'm not sure if the 'premium' is really worth it for casual weekend use.

One specific detail I’m worried about is the panoramic sunroof. I absolutely love having the extra light in the cabin, but I’m terrified of installing a rack that might interfere with the glass mechanism or cause weird vibrations when the roof is tilted open. I’m also curious if anyone has found a specific brand that doesn't tank the fuel economy too badly—I’m currently getting great MPG and would hate to lose 4 or 5 miles per gallon just for the sake of some crossbars.

So, for those of you who have already added a rack to your Taos, what has your experience been like? Did you go with the dealership parts or an aftermarket setup like Thule, Yakima, or even Rhino-Rack? I'd specifically love to know about the ease of installation and if you've noticed any annoying whistling sounds during long drives. Any recommendations or tips on where to buy would be hugely appreciated!

sooo, i compared VW Taos Base Carrier Bars 5GJ071151 vs Thule WingBar Evo 118. OEM is cheaper but noisy, while Thule is silent and looks way more rugged!! tbh, Thule is the best choice cuz it dont block the sunroof mechanism at all and looks amazing. realy worth the extra cash!! gl!

Seconding the Yakima JetStream Bars recommendation! Honestly, safety is my main concern with that heavy cargo box. Compare Thule WingBar Edge vs Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBarThule is the gold standard for security, while Rhino-Rack is a reliable, budget-friendly alternative. Tip: Use a torque wrench on those rails and triple-check pano clearance before opening the glass. Safety first!! gl

- In my experience, Yakima JetStream Bars with RidgeLine Towers have the best aero profile for the Taos.
- Zero pano roof interference and wind noise is basically nonexistent... totally worth it tbh!!

Quick question - whats ur total budget? Honestly, I think some mid-tier brands might work but make sure they clear the pano roof... iirc some setups hit the glass, so be careful!!
