Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to electric and picked up a Volvo XC40 Recharge, and so far, I am absolutely loving the performance and that silent cabin. However, I’ve quickly realized that while the interior is great for daily driving, it’s a bit tight for the kind of outdoor adventures my family likes to go on. With two kids and a dog in the back, the trunk space disappears instantly, so I’m in desperate need of a high-quality, sturdy roof rack system.
I’ve been doing some research, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. Since this is an EV, I’m particularly concerned about two things: aerodynamics and weight. I know that adding anything to the roof is going to impact my range, so I’m looking for something with a sleek, low-profile design that minimizes drag as much as possible. I’d hate to see a massive drop in my miles-per-kWh just because of the crossbars.
Another specific detail I’m worried about is the panoramic sunroof. My XC40 is equipped with one, and I’ve read horror stories about certain aftermarket racks interfering with the glass when it tilts or slides open. I need a setup that offers enough clearance to keep the sunroof functional without any risk of contact.
I’m planning to haul a heavy Thule Motion XT cargo box for most trips, and occasionally a couple of mountain bikes. I’ve looked at the official Volvo OEM bars, but some users mentioned they can be a bit noisy at highway speeds. I’ve also looked at the Thule WingBar Edge and some Yakima setups, but I’m not sure which one fits the flush rails of the Recharge most securely. I want something that feels rock-solid and doesn't whistle or vibrate when I'm hitting 70 mph on the interstate.

sooo i totally get the struggle! i bought the Volvo XC40 Load Carriers for my Recharge last year thinking they'd be the best fit since they're OEM, but honestly? i was kinda disappointed. they sit pretty high off the roof which is great for sunroof clearance, but the wind noise at 70mph was actually driving me crazy. plus, that extra height definitely creates more drag, and i noticed like a 10% hit to my range on long trips. not ideal when youre already stressing about chargers, right?
for your situation, i highkey recommend the Thule WingBar Edge 9594 system with the Thule Flush Rail Kit 186010. basically, these are way more aerodynamic than the factory ones because they have that sleek, integrated look that doesn't stick out past the feet. i swapped to these and the whistle is almost gone. honestly, it's night and day.
regarding the panoramic sunroof: its a tight fit but it DOES work. i can tilt and slide mine with the Thule WingBar Edge installed, though it looks scary close. if you're worried about the Thule Motion XT L Cargo Box clamps touching the glass, just make sure you position the bars correctly on the flush rails.

I went through this last year when I first got my Recharge! Honestly, I was sooo stressed about the panoramic roof clearing and the range hit. After years of using bulky racks on my old gas cars, I wanted something more budget-friendly but still solid.
I ended up comparing two main setups:
1. Turtle Air 1 Roof Rack Cross Bars vs. 2. Thule WingBar Edge
- The Turtle bars are amazing for the price! They're like half the cost of Thule and have a super low profile. I was worried they'd be flimsy, but they've been rock-solid for my gear.
- The Thule WingBar Edge is definitely the gold standard for silence, but man, that price tag is steep when you're already paying for the EV premium.
Basically, I went with the Turtle bars and haven't looked back. They dont whistle at 70 mph and my sunroof clears them with room to spare! Plus, saving that cash meant more money for the Thule Motion XT XL Cargo Box anyway. Just sharing my journey, gl with the choice! 👍

Honestly, for your XC40 Recharge, I'd skip the OEM bars if ur worried about noise. I've been super happy with the Yakima JetStream Crossbars paired with the Yakima SkyLine Towers. They're basically silent and the aerodynamic shape is killer for EV range. Plus, they sit high enough that my panoramic sunroof clears them no problem. It's a rock-solid setup and honestly looks way sleeker than the Volvo ones. gl!

Quick question - how often are you planning on keeping the rack on the car when you aren't hauling the cargo box?? Honestly, since you're so worried about safety and the panoramic roof clearance, I've been looking into this a ton since I'm kinda new to the EV world too.
