Hey everyone! I’m beyond excited because I finally have my Volvo EX90 delivery date confirmed for next month. I’m moving up from a smaller plug-in hybrid, so this is my first foray into owning a long-range, fully electric SUV with a massive 111kWh battery. While I’m thrilled about the range, I’m starting to get a little nervous about my home charging setup.

Since the EX90 has such a high-capacity battery, I want to make sure I’m installing a Level 2 charger that can actually keep up. I’ve been looking at options like the ChargePoint Home Flex and the Wallbox Pulsar Plus, but I’m curious if there’s a specific brand that plays more 'nicely' with Volvo’s software system. I really want something that allows me to schedule charging during off-peak hours easily through an app without it glitching out or losing connection with the car.

My garage is already pre-wired for a 50-amp circuit, so I'm looking for a station that can maximize that output. I’ve also heard that some EX90 owners are looking into bi-directional charging capabilities since Volvo mentioned the car would support it in the future. Is it worth investing in a charger that supports V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) right now, or should I just stick to a reliable, standard smart charger for now?

Budget-wise, I’m hoping to stay under $700 for the unit itself (not including installation). I live in a climate that gets pretty cold in the winter, so a durable cable that doesn't get stiff as a board in 20-degree weather is a huge plus for me!

For those of you who have already taken delivery or have done the deep-dive research, which home charging station would you recommend as the best overall match for the EX90’s specs and tech?

Dude, so pumped for your EX90 delivery!! Honestly, with a massive 111kWh battery, you *really* gotta prioritize the safety and thermal management of your setup. I've seen some cheap chargers get scary hot during those long 10-hour sessions, and you definitely don't want that.

For your 50-amp circuit, I highkey recommend the Grizzl-E Smart NEMA 14-50 40 Amp EV Charger. Since it's made in Canada, the cable is specifically designed to stay flexible and not get stiff as a board when it's freezing out—perfect for those 20-degree mornings! It's built like a tank, UL-certified for safety, and well under your $700 budget.

About the V2H stuff? I'd basically wait. The tech is still super new and most current bi-directional setups are proprietary and wayyyy over your budget right now. Just get a rock-solid, safe smart charger today and enjoy that Volvo! Safety first, right? gl! 👍

Oh man, congrats on the EX90! That 111kWh battery is HUGE, right?? Honestly, I've been using the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 WiFi Enabled 240V Electric Vehicle EV Charger and it's been amazing with my Volvo setup. The app is super reliable for scheduling off-peak charging, so no glitches there! Plus, the cable stays flexible even when it's freezing out. Since you're pre-wired for 50 amps, it'll maximize ur output perfectly. I'd skip V2H for now—it's still kinda pricey and messy. Stick with the Flex, you'll love it! gl!

I went through this last year when I upgraded to a larger EV, and honestly, the bi-directional thing is still a bit of a wildcard. In my experience, waiting for V2H technology to become mainstream is a bit like chasing a ghost—I looked into it deeply and realized the hardware needed for the house is currently way more expensive than the car charger itself.

I ended up sticking with a high-quality smart station that maximizes my 50-amp circuit (pulling 40 amps). Over the years, I've tried many different setups, and the most important thing I've learned is that software stability is KING. My current setup uses an app that's been super reliable for scheduling, which is basically all you need to save money. Also, since you mentioned the cold, definately check the cable flexibility! I had one years ago that felt like a frozen garden hose in January... total nightmare. My current one stays nice and floppy even in the snow. Good luck with the EX90, that battery is huge!!

So I went through this exact same thing last year when I was prepping for a big SUV delivery. ngl, I was super stressed about the cost of everything, especially with those high-capacity batteries. I eventually landed on the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp with 24-foot Cable and honestly? I've been so happy with it. Since ur garage is already pre-wired for a 50-amp circuit, you can just plug it in and it'll run at 40A, which is basically perfect for topping off that 111kWh battery overnight while u sleep.

Living in a snowy climate, the cable was my biggest worry, but this one stays totally flexible even when it’s like 15 degrees out. The app has been rock solid for scheduling off-peak times, iirc it's never actually glitched on me.

Quick tip: Skip the V2H-ready chargers for now. The tech is still evolving so fast it's probably better to save ur cash and stick with a reliable, standard smart charger for a few years! peace

ngl I’m in the same boat as you, just waiting for my delivery and trying not to obsess over the setup lol. From what I’ve been reading in the owner groups, there are a few things that seem to trip people up with these big battery SUVs that you should probably watch out for: * **The 'Heat' Factor:** Since the EX90 has such a massive battery, it’s going to be pulling max power for like 10+ hours straight. A lot of people are saying that for a 50-amp circuit, hardwiring is wayyy safer than using a 14-50 plug because those outlets can sometimes get super hot or even melt during those really long sessions.
* **Utility Rebates:** Definitely check with your power company first! Some of them won't give you the cheap overnight rates unless you use a specific 'approved' smart station they can talk to, so you don't want to buy one and find out it doesn't qualify for the credit.
* **Software Lag:** Volvo's software can be a bit finicky at launch, so relying on the car to start the charge might be risky. It's usually better to let the charging station handle the schedule itself so it doesn't glitch out. Are you planning to hardwire it or just use the plug? I'm leaning towards hardwiring just to be safe but idk if it’s overkill? Honestly so nervous about getting it right!!
