I just got this Q6 e-tron last week and honestly im already losing my mind with the charging situation. The mobile connector they gave me feels like a cheap piece of plastic and it keeps overheating in my garage here in Phoenix. I spent a fortune on this car and it just feels like the accessories are such an afterthought. Like I tried to plug it in last night after a long drive and the cable is so stiff its basically a wrestling match just to get it to reach the port. It's so frustrating because you'd think for a luxury brand they'd give you something that actually feels high quality but here I am struggling in the dark.

My logic was that the stock equipment would be enough to get me by for a few months but clearly I was wrong and now I'm scrambling. I really need a proper level 2 home station that wont melt in 100 degree heat and maybe a better travel cable for when I go to my parents place in Tucson. I was looking at the ChargePoint Home Flex because everyone says its good but then I saw some stuff about NACS adapters and now im just confused. Since the Q6 is 800V does that even matter for home charging or is that only for the fast chargers? I dont want to buy something that bottlenecks the car or worse, fries the battery because of some cheap components. I was also thinking about the Wallbox Pulsar Plus but I heard the cable is kind of short and my driveway is a bit of a weird layout.

Budget is around 1200 bucks for the whole setup including the electrician but i just want something that works every single time without me having to baby it. Also looking for a decent cable bag because the one it came with is a joke and its already tearing at the seams. Does anyone actually have a setup they trust for this specific model? Im tired of waking up and seeing that it only gained 10% overnight because the charger throttled itself and i really need this sorted before my road trip next month...

Honestly, you dont need to drop a fortune to get something reliable. I've been super satisfied with the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. Its usually around 400 bucks. That leaves plenty of room in your 1200 budget for a good electrician. Since you're in Phoenix, I highly recommend hardwiring it instead of using a plug. Hardwiring is way safer for sustained loads. You wont have to worry about a NEMA outlet melting or the car throttling because of heat at the wall socket. It's J1772 so it plugs right into your Audi without any messy adapters. About the 800V thing, dont sweat it for home charging. That only matters when youre at a DC fast charger. For Level 2 at home, its all standard AC. The car handles it fine. For your Tucson trips, grab the Lectron Level 2 Portable EV Charger 40 Amp NEMA 14-50. It stays much cooler than the Audi OEM one. Plus, the cable isnt as stiff as a frozen garden hose. For the storage mess, I picked up a BougeRV EV Cable Bag and it holds everything. Zipper doesnt die. Works well. If you hardwire the Emporia and get the Lectron for travel, you're looking at maybe 650 in hardware. That leaves a good chunk for the install. Its way more robust than the stock gear Audi threw in... definitely worth it for the peace of mind before your road trip next month.

Go with ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger 50 Amp for cool app features, or Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp if you just want simple, bulletproof hardware for that AZ heat.

@Reply 1 - good point! Tbh my old setup throttled badly in the heat, wasting money. Id suggest you:

  • check wire gauge
  • verify thermal limits Be careful with those sustained loads.

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
