Hey everyone! I recently joined the club and picked up a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500. I’ve spent years driving sedans, so moving into a full-size truck has been a dream come true. While I love how it handles on the highway, I’m really itching to get it off the pavement and onto some real trails. I’m planning on doing some weekend overlanding and hitting some moderate forest service roads, but since the truck is currently bone-stock, I’m a little nervous about hitting a trail and realizing I’m ill-equipped.
I’ve been doing a ton of research, but the sheer volume of aftermarket parts for the Silverado is honestly a bit overwhelming. I don't want to spend money on 'mall crawler' accessories that just look cool; I want gear that actually improves performance or protects the truck when things get bumpy.
Specifically, I’ve been looking into a few things. First, I’m torn between just doing a 2-inch leveling kit to clear some larger tires or if I should just bite the bullet and go for a full 4-inch suspension lift. I’ve also heard that the stock skid plates on these trucks can be a bit thin, so I’m wondering if upgraded underbody protection should be a priority. I’m also looking at moving to a 33-inch or 35-inch all-terrain tire—maybe something like the BFGoodrich KO2s—but I’m worried about how much that’s going to kill my gas mileage during my daily commute to work.
I’m really looking for a balance between off-road capability and everyday reliability. I’m not trying to build a professional rock crawler, but I want to be confident when I run into deep mud or a rocky incline.
For those of you who have been taking your Silverados off-road for a while, what are the absolute 'must-have' accessories you’d recommend starting with? If you had a budget for the first three or four mods to make the truck trail-ready without ruining the ride quality, what would they be?
Respectfully, I'd maybe consider another option instead of a big lift. I think huge lifts kinda stress your parts and feel less safe on highways. I'm satisfied with the Eibach Pro-Truck Lift System (E60-23-032-05-22) cuz it feels very stable. Also, definitely look into protection—the RCI Metalworks Silverado 1500 Full Skid Plate Package is way tougher than stock. It's basically the safest way to hit trails without a breakdown lol. gl!
Curious - what's your terrain like? For safety: 1. Bilstein 5100 Series Adjustable Shocks (better handling)
2. Rough Country 4-inch Lift Kit (max clearance) Honestly, huge lifts kinda stress your CV axles!
> I’m torn between just doing a 2-inch leveling kit to clear some larger tires or if I should just bite the bullet... I would suggest the ReadyLift 2.0'' Leveling Kit and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 LT275/70R18 tires. It keeps the ride sooo smooth. Plus, it wont totally wreck ur MPG like a huge lift lol.
