Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a GMC Yukon XL, and while I absolutely love the massive amount of space, it’s becoming a bit of a mess back there. Every time I take a turn, I hear groceries or the kids' sports gear sliding all over the cargo area. I’m looking for something durable that specifically fits the XL’s dimensions, especially behind the third row. I’ve seen some collapsible bins and heavy-duty nets, but I’m worried they won’t stay put on the carpet. Does anyone have a favorite brand or a specific custom-fit setup that keeps things from shifting around during long road trips? I'd love to know what actually works best for this model!
be careful with those cheap universal bins cuz they *literally* just slide on the XL carpet. They basically become projectiles in that huge space! In my experience, you should stick with:
- GMC factory-fit dividers
- WeatherTech cargo blocks
Honestly, just make sure whatever you get has a super aggressive grip on the bottom. I've wasted money over the years on flimsy nets that just tangle... hope it helps! gl
Quick question! Honestly, I’m obsessed with my Yukon XL, it’s literally a cavern back there lol. Before I give you my full techy breakdown of what works, I gotta know:
1. Are you usually keeping that third row UP or folded down?
2. Do you have a rubber floor liner already, or are you working with the factory carpet?
The grip factor changes sooo much depending on those two things!!
Yo! So I’ve been hauling kids and gear in GMC rigs for like... over 15 years now? I totally get the struggle. I actually remember my first XL back in 2010—I bought a massive bag of oranges, took a sharp turn, and basically turned the back of my truck into a juice factory lol. It was a total nightmare to clean up.
Before I get into the brand breakdown tho, I gotta ask a couple things to narrow it down: Are you mostly keeping that 3rd row UP or folded down? Also, whats the budget lookin like for this setup??
In my experience, the market for these is basically split into three tiers. You’ve got the OEM GMC stuff, which fits perfectly because it's designed for the dimensions, but they charge an absolute fortune for it. Then you have WeatherTech, which is super durable, but I've found their "blocks" system can be hit or miss on the XL carpet if you’re hauling heavy sports gear. Finally, there’s the collapsible bin market. Honestly, I’ve tried the cheap $20 ones from the big box stores and they’re trash. They literally just surf across the carpet when you hit the brakes.
If you want something that actually stays put, look for the brands like Rola or the higher-end heavy-duty organizers. The secret is the "teeth" on the bottom. If it doesnt have super aggressive hook-and-loop strips, it wont stand a chance in that massive space. I eventually learned that spending more on one good, weighted organizer is way better than buying four cheap ones that just break or slide around. Anyway, just my two cents after years of trial and error! gl!
@Reply #6 - good point! Honestly, i have been driving these big rigs for over a decade and the cargo situation is usually the most frustrating part. I had such high hopes for some of the newer modular stuff but it all feels like cheap plastic lately. I remember my old 2018 setup where the velcro literally ripped the carpet fibers out... total disaster. It looked like a cat had been sharpening its claws back there for a month. Most of what you find online is just not built for the actual scale of an XL. Everything slides. Everything rattles. Its honestly annoying how hard it is to find something that doesnt feel like a toy when you're actually loading it up with heavy gear. If you're tired of stuff moving around, i’d say:
