My logic was just get a cheap drop-in liner but then I read they trap moisture and rust the bed out. Now Im looking at the BakFlip MX4 but people say they leak and Im in rainy Seattle with a $1500 budget... is Line-X really worth the extra cash or is there a better combo?

Unfortunately, those plastic drop-ins are basically a total letdown since they vibrate and rub the paint right off. I had issues with the BAK Industries BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover leaking during heavy Seattle storms too, so its not as good as expected for the price. Go with Line-X Premium UV-Resistant Spray-On Bedliner for the permanent protection. You can add a TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll-up Tonneau Cover to stay dry without breaking your budget.

Saw this earlier and @Reply #3 - good point! But honestly, get a UnderCover Classic One-Piece Truck Bed Cover! It’s amazing for safety and keeps gear 100% dry in Seattle! Love it!

To add to the point above: honestly its just depressing how many "waterproof" covers fail the first time it pours in Seattle. I went through three setups before finding something that didnt ruin my gear. For that $1500 budget, you can actually get a killer setup if you avoid the big name marketing traps.

  • Quick Tip: Always buy a separate tailgate seal kit. No cover on earth stops the water that sucks in through the tailgate gaps while youre driving.
  • Resource: Check out the RealTruck install guides for the Sierra 2500... they show the specific drain hole locations which are vital for our weather. I would look at these instead: 1. BedRug Classic Bed Liner Sierra 2500HD 6.6ft Bed
  • Tbh this is way better than spray-on for most. It wont scratch the paint like a drop-in and it doesnt trap water cuz the foam is closed-cell. Super easy on the knees too. 2. TruXedo Sentry CT Hard Rolling Truck Bed Cover
  • This thing is solid. Since it rolls, you dont have the hinge leaks that the BakFlip is famous for in heavy rain. Hang in there, its worth getting it right the first time... let me know if you need help with the install stuff.

Like someone mentioned, water ingress is a serious risk. Are you hauling sensitive gear? In my experience, poor seals lead to:

  • corrosion
  • mildew How often do you access the bed tho?

To add to the point above: I spent way too much time obsessing over this same stuff when I first got my truck. I initially went with a budget option and it was a total mess... water pooled in the corners and I was constantly worried about my tools rusting. I eventually switched brands and I've been really happy with the reliability of the new setup. No complaints at all about the protection it provides for my investment.

  • I found that some of the mass-market brands use thinner rubber seals that dont hold up well compared to the smaller, specialized manufacturers.
  • The rail mounting system on my current one is much sturdier, which gives me a lot more peace of mind when I'm on the highway. I had a couple of clarifying questions to see what fits best for you:
  • Do you prioritize a completely flush look or are you more concerned with having the absolute best water seal possible?
  • How often are you planning to haul things that are taller than the bed rails?
