Hey everyone! I just brought home a new Honda Pilot TrailSport and I am super excited to get it out on some trails. It is already pretty solid with the factory skid plates, but I want to add a few more things before my first big camping trip. I am trying to balance off-road performance with keeping it comfortable for my daily commute.

I have been looking into a few upgrades:

  • More aggressive all-terrain tires
  • A high-quality roof platform for a tent
  • Additional recovery gear like traction boards

There are so many options out there that it is getting a little overwhelming. For those of you who actually take your Pilot off the pavement, which accessories did you find most useful?

In my experience, the Pilot is super solid but dont go too crazy or youll ruin the ride quality. Over the years, I've tried many setups and I always tell people to focus on safety and reliability first.

  • Falken Wildpeak A/T4W 265/60R18 vs BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2. The Falkens are WAY better for daily driving cuz they're quieter and handle rain much better. The KO2s look tough but they definitely get loud as they wear down.
  • MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Boards vs generic knock-offs. Honestly, spend the extra cash on the real ones. I've actually seen cheap boards shatter under the weight of an SUV and it's pretty scary what those shards can do. I'd suggest going with the Falkens first for your daily commute. They're basically the safest balance for performance and highway manners. Safety is the one thing you shouldn't compromise on. gl!

For your situation, I've gotta warn you about overloading. I've had some issues with weight distribution in the past and it was honestly a DISASTER for safety. My biggest warning is watching that roof weight. If you slap a heavy platform and tent up there, the Pilot gets super tippy on off-camber trails... literally felt like I was gonna flip once. Safety-first, seriously. Here's what I recommend to keep things reliable:

  • Get a full-size spare tire because a donut is basically useless in the dirt
  • Look into ditch lights so you can actually see the trail edges at night
  • A kinetic recovery rope since they're safer for the frame than stiff chains The factory skids are okay I guess, but they're not as good as expected if you really smash a rock. Just watch your total weight cuz it kills the handling. gl!

Seconding that! Heavy platforms unfortunately kill MPG and add noise. Try a Prinsu Honda Pilot Roof Rack or Front Runner Slimsport Roof Rack Kit cuz Prinsu is basically best for noise, tbh.
