I just joined the Santa Cruz club and I'm absolutely loving the truck, but I'm having a hard time deciding on the best bed setup. Since the bed is shorter and features that integrated trunk, I’m worried about finding a tonneau cover that doesn't interfere with the lid or block the rear window. I also need a sturdy rack system that works with the factory side rails to carry my mountain bikes and gear. Have any of you had success with specific brands like Roll-N-Lock or Yakima that fit the unique dimensions of the Santa Cruz? I’m looking for something weather-resistant that still allows full access to the trunk. Which bed cover and rack combo would you recommend for the best fit and functionality?
This^ Also wanted to add a few technical bits... honestly, if you want trunk access, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT Retractable Truck Bed Cover is the way to go cuz of those integrated T-slots.
- Use Yakima Landing Pad 26 to mount directly to the factory rails.
- Add Yakima SkyLine Towers so you can pop the rack off easily.
It basically keeps the trunk 100% functional while staying weather-resistant. gl!
Sooo, I'm also pretty new to this and honestly, I've been kinda nervous about picking the wrong thing... I really don't wanna waste money on stuff that doesn't fit right, you know? For your situation, I've been looking at value options cuz some gear is just crazy expensive and I'm a bit cautious about the quality.
Here's what I recommend comparing:
- TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll-up Truck Bed Cover: This is way more budget-friendly. It’s great cuz it rolls all the way to the cab so you can see out the window, but unfortunately, it's not very "theft-proof" since it's just vinyl. It's a bit flimsy, which is disappointing, but it works.
- Bak Industries BAKFlip G2 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover: This is much more secure, but it's heavier. I had issues with a similar one before where the hinges felt stiff... not as good as expected for the price tbh, but it keeps things dry.
- Thule Big Mouth Upright Bike Carrier: For the rack, this is a solid alternative if you have crossbars already.
I guess it depends on if you value security or saving cash more. Good luck tho!
For your situation, I'd use the RetraxPRO XR Retractable Truck Bed Cover and Rhino-Rack Vortex Bars. Its rock-solid—hauling gear feels way safer and trunk access is totally unobstructed. Love mine!
Sooo, I did a bunch of market research before I pulled the trigger on my setup cuz I didn't want to lose that trunk access or spend a fortune. Basically, most people go for the big names, but you gotta watch out for the canister size on the Santa Cruz bed since it's already pretty SHORT.
For your situation, I'd actually look into the Syneticusa Retractable Hard Tonneau. Honestly, it's a GREAT value option compared to some of the $1,500+ brands. It has the T-slots built into the rails for rack mounting, and it doesnt sit high at all, so you can still see out the back window. The weather resistance is decent too, though no cover is 100% waterproof... just a heads up. It's aluminum, so it's sturdy enough for gear, and it wont block the trunk lid if you install it right.
For the bikes, check out the Thule WingBar Evo 118 bars paired with the Thule Evo Raised Rail foot pack. But tbh, if you're hauling mountain bikes, I'd almost suggest adding the RockyMounts BrassKnuckles Bike Rack to mount on top of those bars. It keeps the bikes secure without touching the frame, which is clutch if you have carbon bikes or just want to protect the paint.
Market-wise, the Syneticusa gives you like 90% of the performance of high-end brands for way less money. It's all about finding that balance between cost and function... just make sure you align the rails perfectly during install or the trunk lid might rub. GL with the new truck!
