I recently picked up a new Hyundai Santa Cruz and I’m absolutely loving the drive, but I’m still trying to figure out the best way to set up the bed for daily use. Since the bed is a bit shorter than a traditional truck, I’m specifically looking for ways to maximize the space. I’ve been looking at bed extenders for hauling my mountain bike and maybe some internal dividers to keep smaller gear from sliding into the under-bed trunk. I’m also curious if anyone has found a good weather-stripping kit to keep dust out of the corners. Between bed mats, rails, or cargo nets, what have you guys found to be the most essential? For those who have lived with the truck for a while, which bed accessories are actually worth the investment?
Ok so, i had issues with extenders failing on the highway, which is seriously dangerous tbh. Comparing a flimsy extender vs cargo nets vs a Thule GateMate PRO Tailgate Pad, the pad provides the most security... Honestly, the pad is the best choice cuz it's way safer and you wont have to worry about reliability!
Check out the aftermarket ecosystem before you buy anything from the dealer! Looking at the market data for the Santa Cruz, you gotta realize it's a unique setup with a composite bed. Most traditional truck gear doesnt fit right because of the integrated tonneau rails. Adding my two cents from a technical perspective... I've done deep dives on several forums and, honestly, the OEM extender is a letdown because of the mounting geometry—it eats up too much width. If you want to actually maximize that short bed, check out the AMP Research BedXTender HD Sport Black Part Number 74822-01A. In my experience, it provides a much more robust pivot point and better clearance for mountain bikes compared to the flimsy OEM one mentioned earlier. Also, if ur worried about dust, the factory seal is notoriously leaky at the corners. Pro tip: look into the ESI Ultimate Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal 10ft. It’s technically superior to generic foam strips because of the EPDM rubber density and adhesive quality. For organization, instead of a flimsy net, look at the LUMARAY Bed Dividers for Hyundai Santa Cruz. They slide right into the existing bed notches and wont block the under-bed trunk lid, which is a HUGE design flaw with most generic dividers. There's a great resource at the Santa Cruz Forums specifically in their 'Technical & Modifications' section where users have benchmarked these against the OEM versions. Plus, if you really want to protect the finish, the WeatherTech TechLiner Bed Liner 36SC01 is laser-measured to fit the Santa Cruz's specific contours perfectly. Basically, going aftermarket usually gives you better tolerances than the mass-produced dealer add-ons. gl with the build!
Same boat, watching this
• Honestly, I had issues with the OEM extender—it’s realy overpriced and felt flimsy. Unfortunately, it’s not as good as expected, so I’d just go with a cheap cargo net instead.
So basically the consensus is skip the OEM extender. Just go with any generic cargo net from Harbor Freight, its way more budget-friendly and works pretty well for ur gear... gl!
Been thinking about this since I saw your post earlier. Honestly, the bed on this thing is such a love-hate relationship for me too. I've had mine since they first hit the lots and the struggle to make that small footprint work for real-life gear is just... exhausting. It's so annoying because the truck is perfect otherwise, but that bed size really keeps you on your toes. You think you've got it figured out and then one piece of gear just wont fit. You might want to be careful before you pull the trigger on anything because:
