Hey everyone! I recently joined the Santa Cruz family with a new 2024 Night edition, and I’m absolutely loving the pick-up versatility so far. However, I’m running into a bit of a dilemma regarding the bed. Since the Santa Cruz has that unique bed shape and integrated factory features, I’m having a hard time deciding which tonneau cover actually fits the lifestyle best without compromising the trunk space.
I live in an area where we get quite a bit of rain, so weather resistance is a top priority for me. I really want to keep my groceries and gear dry, but I’m also worried about losing access to that awesome under-bed storage trunk if the cover rails are too bulky. I’ve been looking at a few different styles—specifically the hard folding ones versus the retractable options—but I’ve heard mixed reviews about how much room the canisters take up on such a short bed.
I’ve checked out the Lomax and the BakFlip models, but I’m curious if anyone here has real-world experience with them on this specific truck. Does the installation interfere with the factory side rails or the power outlet in the bed? Also, for those who went with the OEM cover, is it worth the premium price, or is there an aftermarket brand that offers better seals and security?
I’m hoping to find something durable that looks sleek and doesn't rattle when I’m hitting highway speeds. Budget-wise, I'm willing to spend a bit more for quality, maybe up to $1,200, if it means it will last and actually keep the water out.
For those of you who have been living with your Santa Cruz for a while, which tonneau cover have you found to be the best overall in terms of fit, water resistance, and ease of use?
Dude, +1 to what was said earlier! Honestly, I’ve been tracking Santa Cruz bed accessories since the first 2022 models dropped and it’s basically a toss-up between space and weatherproofing. I went through the same headache with my first truck... had a cheap soft cover that leaked like a sieve so I switched to the BAK BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover. It’s slightly over ur budget sometimes but worth the premium for those matte panels that dont rattle at 80mph. If ur really worried about the trunk, definitely avoid the retractable ones—they're cool but that canister is a total space killer. Another solid one to check out is the UnderCover ArmorFlex Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover which has a coating that's basically indestructible against heavy rain. Both of these play nice with the factory rails too, so u dont lose any functionality. gl with the Night edition! 👍
yo, congrats on the Night edition! I'm still kinda new to this, but honestly, I'm sooo happy with my Lomax Stance Hard Folding Cover. Check out the Santa Cruz forums or some YouTube installs for the Stance specifically. It's awesome because it folds all the way up against the back window, so it doesn't block the trunk or the bed power outlet at all. Plus, it's super sturdy at highway speeds, no rattling stuff to worry about!! gl!
Jumping in here because the technical specs on the Santa Cruz bed are wild!! If you're worried about that trunk, honestly, just get any hard folding cover from Lomax. You can't go wrong there because they don't use those bulky canisters that eat up your space. Pro tip: Check out the Santa Cruz Forums technical sections for some amazing seal-testing videos... basically show you exactly where the water leaks in. Plus, those guys have huge threads on rail compatibility!
Seconding the recommendation above for sure! Hard folders are the way to go if you want to keep that trunk accessible. I went through the same thing with my 2023 and actually ended up with the Rough Country Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover for Hyundai Santa Cruz because it's way more budget-friendly than the OEM or BakFlip stuff. I think I paid around $650?
It keeps like 95% of the water out even in heavy rain, though you might get a tiny drip near the tailgate corners. Seriously tho, if you're worried about costs, don't sleep on the Gator FX Hard Folding Tonneau Cover. It's super sturdy, doesn't rattle at 75mph, and leaves the power outlet totally clear. Just make sure to check the rail seals during install cuz that's where the rain usually creeps in!
ok so basically, the Santa Cruz bed is a weird beast because of that trunk... unfortunately i learned the hard way that retractable covers are kinda bad for us. I tried a retractable one first and honestly hated it because the canister literally eats like 10 inches of your bed space. Plus, it was NOT as good as expected with the rain, it leaked right onto my groceries.
I ended up switching to a hard folding cover like the [[Lomax]] and i think it's way better for the lifestyle. It sits super flush so it looks sleek, but the best part is it doesnt block the trunk handle as much as those bulky rails do. i guess you still gotta be careful during install tho... i had issues with the seals not lining up perfectly at first cuz of the factory side rails, but after some fiddling it stayed dry. anyway, do you mostly carry tall gear or just groceries? cuz that really changes if you want something that folds all the way up against the window or not! but yeah, hard fold is the way to go imo. gl!
