Hi everyone! I finally realized a lifelong dream and picked up a Series 2 E-Type recently. It’s in gorgeous shape, but I’m well aware that owning a vintage British legend comes with a unique set of maintenance responsibilities. I want to be proactive rather than reactive, especially given the reputation of the Lucas electrical systems and the specific needs of that 4.2L XK engine.
I’ve already got a basic set of tools, a quality torque wrench, and a proper lead hammer for the wire wheel knock-offs, but I feel like I’m just scratching the surface. I’m planning on doing most of the routine upkeep myself, like fluid changes and ignition timing, but I’m curious about the 'hidden' essentials. For example, are there specific sync tools for the triple SU carbs that you guys prefer, or perhaps a particular battery tender that plays nice with these older systems? I’m also looking for recommendations on specialized cleaning kits for the engine bay to keep those polished covers looking sharp.
I want to put together a dedicated 'maintenance trunk' for the garage. Beyond the standard wrenches, what are the absolute must-have specialty accessories or diagnostic tools you’d recommend for a new E-Type owner to keep things running smoothly?
Seconding the recommendation for a multimeter!! I'm still learning too, but for safety, you HAVE to get a First Alert FE5GR Fire Extinguisher for the trunk. They're only like $20 and worth every penny if things get spicy. Also, a Performance Tool W1145 Remote Starter Switch is super cheap ($15ish) and makes solo timing much safer for beginners like us. gl!!
In my experience, you're gonna need a solid sync tool to keep those triple SUs happy. I've used the Gunson G4053 Carbalancer for years and I'm super satisfied with how precise it is compared to the old "hissing tube" method lol. It basically makes balancing the airflow a breeze, which is key for a smooth idle on that 4.2L engine. Also, for the electrical side, I've had no complaints with the CTEK MXS 5.0 Battery Charger with Temperature Compensation. It's great for vintage systems because it doesn't overcharge. For those polished covers, Autosol Metal Polish 75ml Tube is the gold standard for getting that mirror finish back. Definately start with the carb balancer first tho, cuz if the airflow is off, nothing else matters!!! gl!
Congrats on the Series 2! In my experience, a Fluke 115 Digital Multimeter is non-negotiable for chasing those Lucas gremlins. For the carbs, I've always preferred the STE SK Carburetor Sync Tool over the Gunson—it’s dead simple and rugged. Also, dont forget some Simichrome Polish 50g Tube for the engine bay. It’s better than the standard stuff for keeping those alloy covers gleaming without scratching. GL with the new cat! 👍
So basically, I'm still learning but I'm super paranoid about engine wear. For a budget-friendly trunk, you might want to consider: * Lucas Oil TB7004 ZDDP Engine Oil Additive - Modern oils lack zinc, so this protects ur cams from damage.
* Lisle 27000 Ignition Spark Tester - It's safer cuz you check for spark without shocking urself... dont want to fry the Lucas coil! Honestly, if ur ever unsure, maybe ask a pro... just to be safe!!
