I just picked up a new Range Rover Velar and I’m looking to install a high-quality dash cam that won't ruin the clean aesthetic of the interior. I’m a bit worried about the complex wiring and whether a traditional hardwire kit might interfere with the Pivi Pro system or the rearview mirror housing. Does anyone have experience with a specific brand that looks OEM or fits discreetly behind the mirror? I’m specifically looking for something with 4K resolution and reliable parking mode features. Any advice on professional installation versus DIY for this specific model would be awesome. What are you guys using in your Velars to keep them protected?

OMG congrats on the Velar!! I'm also pretty new to this but I've been obsessing over dash cams lately cuz I didn't wanna ruin my interior either lol.

For your situation, I would suggest looking at these two options if you're trying to save some cash but still want that 4K quality:

* **VIOFO A129 Pro Duo 4K Dual Dash Cam** vs. **70mai Dash Cam A800S 4K**

Basically, the VIOFO is like the gold standard for budget 4K. It's got amazing night vision, but it's a bit bulkier than the 70mai. Honestly, the 70mai Dash Cam A800S 4K is super sleek and probably fits the Velar aesthetic better, plus it's way cheaper!!

I was sooo worried about the wiring too, but actually, you can get a Dongar Dashcam Power Adapter (10-pin Type H for Land Rover/Jaguar) which literally just taps into the power from your rearview mirror. No complex hardwiring needed! It saves so much money on professional installs.

Are you planning on doing the rear camera too? I heard that's the tricky part with the Velar's headliner... anyway, good luck with the new ride!! 👍

Honestly, if you're worried about the Pivi Pro and dont wanna spend like $800 on a pro install, I suggest looking at the Vantrue E1 5K Dash Cam. It is super tiny and basically hides right behind the mirror. I got mine for around $130 on sale, and honestly, the 4K is crisp. It keeps the interior looking clean without all those bulky wires everywhere, right? Plus, the parking mode is solid if you use their cheap hardwire kit. gl!

Same here!

Hey, congrats on the new Velar! Honestly, I felt the EXACT same way when I got mine... I was so terrified of messing up the Pivi Pro or that fancy mirror housing. For your situation, I would suggest looking into the Fitcamx 4K Dash Cam for Land Rover Range Rover Velar. It’s basically what I’m using right now and it literally looks like it came from the factory. It replaces the plastic cover behind the mirror, so there are no wires hanging around at all.

I was super cautious about the wiring too, but this one is kinda plug-and-play with the rain sensor, so no splicing! Tbh, the 4K quality is reallyyy crisp, and I've been pretty satisfied with how it handles parking mode. I still had a local shop do the install just to be safe (I'm a total beginner lol), but it works well and hasn't messed with the electronics at all. Maybe check that one out? gl! 👍

Be extremely careful with how you handle the power draw on these modern Land Rovers! The main issue I've seen is that the Pivi Pro system is *super* sensitive to voltage fluctuations. If you hardwire directly to a 'constantly on' fuse without a high-end voltage cutoff, youre gonna see a lot of "Low Battery" warnings or weird electrical gremlins because the car's Battery Management System (BMS) thinks there is a parasitic leak.

So basically, here is what I recommend from a technical safety perspective:

- Use a dedicated dash cam battery pack for parking mode. It's the only way to get reliable 4K recording without stressing the car's main battery.
- Make sure the wiring is fully shielded. If its not, the electromagnetic interference can actually mess with the ADAS sensors located behind that mirror housing.
- Honestly, go for a professional install. I've seen people break the clips on that plastic shroud... they're incredibly brittle and expensive to replace lol.

Its worth the extra cash to have an expert handle the CAN bus integration. Anyway, good luck with the new ride!

Just saw this thread and I am SO excited to share my experience because I went through a total nightmare when I first started tinkering with my setup! I am basically obsessed with high bitrates and sensor data, but my first install was a disaster because I ignored the technical limits of the hardware.

  • Definitely avoid those generic fuse taps from the big box stores. I used a cheap one and it actually started melting because the contact point was too thin for the constant power draw. It was so scary!
  • Heat soak is a massive problem. These mirror housings look amazing but they act like little ovens. My first high-performance unit actually warped its own casing because there wasnt enough airflow for the processor.
  • Never use a standard class 10 card for 4K. I lost some incredible footage because the write speed couldnt keep up with the raw data stream and the files just corrupted. It is amazing how much power these things pull when youre chasing peak performance, so just be super careful with your wiring and cooling!

Ugh, honestly I wish I had better news for you but my experience has been kind of a letdown so far. I tried a few different setups lately and unfortunately it is just not as easy as the videos make it look. My Velar is basically a giant rolling computer and it seems like every time I try to add something, the Pivi Pro gets all grumpy and starts throwing weird sensor errors. Not sure if this is 100 percent accurate but I heard from a guy at the dealership that Land Rover changed something in the more recent software updates that makes it even harder to hide wires without tripping a fault. IIRC the gateway is super sensitive to anything it doesn't recognize.

  • I had some major issues with the trim pieces around the mirror... they are way more fragile than youd think and I almost snapped a clip.
  • I think the car handles sleep mode in a way that basically kills the parking mode because I kept getting battery drain alerts even with a proper kit.
  • Someone told me that if you mess with the housing too much, it can actually interfere with the rain sensor, though I havent confirmed that myself yet. Basically it has been a struggle and not as good as I expected tbh.
