I’m looking to add some extra storage to my Range Rover Velar for upcoming road trips. I want something that looks sleek and doesn't create too much wind noise at highway speeds. Should I stick with the OEM Land Rover bars, or are Thule or Yakima better for fitting the flush rails? Any specific models you'd recommend?

Honestly, I'd go with the Thule WingBar Edge for Land Rover Velar if ur looking for that sleek look. I tried the OEM bars and unfortunately, they were way noisier than I expected at highway speeds... kinda disappointing tbh. The Yakima JetStream Crossbars are also a solid choice, but they can be tricky to install perfectly on the flush rails. Just be CAREFUL with the torque settings so u dont damage anything!

Seconding the recommendation above regarding those Thule bars! I mean, it's definitely the gold standard, but if youre looking to save some cash without compromising on the sleek look, I'd check out the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black. Basically, these are designed to sit super low on those Velar flush rails, which helps a ton with the drag and wind noise at 80mph.

Background info: The Velar is super aerodynamic for an SUV, so why it matters is that any bar that sits too high disrupts that laminar flow, making that annoying whistling sound. Plus, the OEM ones are pricey and often manufactured by Thule anyway, just with a Land Rover logo and a markup. Solution? Go for a bar that uses an integrated leg design.

I used the Rhino-Rack Vortex 1180mm Silver Bar on a similar setup and found the rubber strip design actually breaks up the wind better than the flat bars. Ngl, it was a bit of a pain to install compared to Thule, but I saved like 150 bucks. Just be REALY careful with that sunroof clearance mentioned in reply #1—test the tilt function slowly the first time you mount 'em!

TL;DR: Thule is best if budget isnt an issue, but Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar is the best value for a quiet, low-profile ride. gl!

I have been doing a ton of market research for my own trip and found a couple of outliers that people usually overlook when they just stick to the big box brands. If you are looking for something a bit different than the standard setups already mentioned, here is what I found:

  • Whispbar S-Wing Flush Bar: These were originally designed by some engineers in New Zealand to be the quietest bars on the planet, basically. They have this unique aerofoil shape that really kills that whistling sound you get at 70 or 80 mph. I think Yakima owns them now? But the tech is still top tier for noise reduction.
  • Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rail Rack Kit: This is a bit of a curveball because it is a full platform, not just crossbars. If you are doing serious road trips with lots of gear, the modularity is insane. You can bolt stuff directly to it. It is super low profile so it still looks pretty mean on a Velar, though it is more of a rugged vibe than a sleek one, you know? Both are solid but it kind of depends on if you want that minimalist look or total utility for the long haul. Tbh I am still leaning towards the platform just for the extra tie-down points.

Warning first: watch out for the panoramic sunroof clearance!! Seriously, some of the lower profile bars look cool but they can actually block the glass from opening or even CRACK it if the clamps are too tight on the flush rails. I've seen it happen on a few Velars over the years, so just be super careful when you're tightening everything down.

Anyway, for ur road trips, I'd honestly skip the OEM Land Rover bars. They're okay, but in my experience, they're kinda loud at highway speeds and look a bit chunky. I've been using Thule setups for a long time now and they're way sleeker. The Thule wings are basically silent compared to the factory ones. Yakima is also a solid bet, but Thule just fits the Velar's vibe better imo. Just make sure the fit kit is exactly for the flush rails so it doesnt scratch the paint. gl!
