I just got my Land Rover Defender and want to start hitting some serious trails. I am looking for recommendations on essential gear like winches, rock sliders, or snorkels.

I have about $3,000 for initial upgrades. What are the absolute must-have accessories for someone starting out with off-roading in this vehicle?

In my experience, off-roading kills panels. tbh I learned the hard way...

  • Tuffant Rock Sliders for New Defender L663 (sturdier?)
  • Lucky8 Rock Sliders (cheaper but unfortunately mine rusted)

Check out the Smittybilt X20 Gen3 12K Winch for its IP68 waterproofing; also, the LandRoverWorld forums are realy a goldmine for technical trail advice... I dont have much experience yet tho!

  • Honestly, before you even think about a winch, you gotta prioritize basic recovery safety. Everyone wants the flashy stuff but being able to air down and back up is way more important for actual traction. A decent portable compressor is gonna be your best friend out there. Big warning tho: never, ever use a tow ball for recovery. I see people do it all the time and its basically a cannonball waiting to happen if it snaps. Stick to rated recovery points and soft shackles. With that 3k budget, dont blow it all on one big item. Grab a solid recovery kit and a tire repair kit first. Reliability is about being prepared for the small stuff that actually happens every trip.
