I just picked up a new Land Rover Defender 110 and I am absolutely loving it so far. It has been a dream car of mine for a while, and now that it is finally in my driveway, I want to make sure it is properly equipped for some weekend trail runs. I am mainly looking at doing some moderate overlanding and greenlaning, but I want to make sure I have the right protection before I get into any sticky situations.

There are so many options out there between the official Land Rover gear and all the aftermarket brands like Lucky8 or Front Runner. I am specifically looking for advice on what the absolute essentials are. I have already been looking at getting a high-quality set of rock sliders and maybe a hidden winch mount, as I want to keep the clean look of the front end as much as possible. I am also debating if the official expedition roof rack is worth the extra wind noise or if I should look for a lower profile setup from a third party.

I do not want to go overboard and turn it into a mall crawler, so I am focusing on functionality first. If you had to pick the first three upgrades for a stock Defender to make it truly trail-ready, what would they be and are there any specific brands you swear by?

Oh man, congrats on the 110!! Seriously an amazing choice. Been thinking about your question and since youre focused on functionality, Id skip the mall crawler stuff and go straight for technical protection. For your first three upgrades, heres what I recommend comparing:

  • Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform for Land Rover Defender 110 vs Land Rover Defender Expedition Roof Rack VPLDR0191: The OEM rack looks cool but its sooo loud. The Rhino-Rack is way lower profile and actually lets you use the sunroof without going deaf. Its better value for the money tbh.
  • TuffAnt Rock Sliders for Land Rover Defender 110: These are incredibly beefy steel sliders. Theyre highkey essential if you dont want to ruin your sills on moderate trails.
  • BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 275/55R20 115/112S tires: Honestly, tires are the biggest factor. Stock rubber is the weak link on trail runs. Idk, Id definitely start with tires and sliders first... GL!! peace

In my experience after years of wheeling, Lucky8 Rock Sliders are essential cuz the OEM ones unfortunately dont hold up, and the Lucky8 Hidden Winch Mount is a must. I also had issues with the official rack being way too loud, so highkey recommend the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack instead. gl!

In my experience, if ur looking for value, skip the big racks for now. Underbody protection is actually the best first move cuz the oil pan is vulnerable. I'd suggest:

  • Tuffant Underbody Protection Kit for Defender L663
  • Factor 55 HitchLink 2.0 for rear recovery
  • Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT 255/65R19 tires Tbh, skids and tires are basically the real essentials. Good luck!
