Which must-have off-road accessories should I get for a Land Rover Defender?

Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Land Rover Defender. I’ve been dreaming about this for years, and now that it’s actually sitting in my driveway, I’m itching to get it off the pavement and into some real dirt. I’m planning a few overlanding trips later this year, mostly looking at a mix of rocky mountain trails and some potentially muddy forest tracks, but I want to make sure the rig is actually prepared for the challenge.

While the Defender is obviously a beast right out of the box, I know the stock setup has its limits. I don't want to be that person who gets stuck on their first real outing because I lacked the basic essentials. I’ve been browsing through various catalogs and forums, and honestly, it’s getting a bit overwhelming. There are thousands of options, from winches and snorkels to heavy-duty roof racks and recovery boards. I’m trying to build something functional that enhances the off-road capability without turning it into a "mall crawler" that's weighed down by unnecessary gear.

Right now, I’m specifically looking for advice on where to start. For context, I’m working with a budget of about $3,500 for this first round of upgrades. I’m debating if I should prioritize underbody protection like a sump guard and rock sliders first, or if I should focus on recovery gear. Also, I’m still running the stock tires—should swapping those out for some dedicated All-Terrains (like KO2s or Wildpeaks) be my absolute first move before even thinking about other accessories?

I’d love to hear from fellow Defender owners who actually spend time on the trails. What were the first three things you added that actually made a noticeable difference in your performance or peace of mind? If you were starting over from scratch today, which off-road accessories would be at the top of your "must-have" list?

Quick question - hitting trails solo or with a crew? That affects my budget math lol. Unfortunately, my first trip was a disaster cuz I had issues with cheap gear that literally melted. Comparing Falken Wildpeak A/T3W (best grip) vs Lucky8 Rock Sliders (saves your sills), tires are technically priority #1 tbh. Lesson learned: stock rubber is just not as good as expected on rocks and will leave you stranded!

Tires vs Sliders? I'd highkey pick BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires!! I’ve literally seen stock rubber fail on rocks, while KO2s have amazing grip. Traction keeps u moving lol! 👍

stumbled upon this discussion and ngl i feel ur pain... i went through this last year and it was a bit of a mess. i tried to be cheap and it actually cost me more in the long run which was super disappointing. basically my journey went like this: 1. i tried keeping the stock tires to save money but unfortunately the 2-ply sidewalls were just not enough for sharp shale. i ended up getting a flat on my first trail and had to drop $1,500 on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 LT255/70R18 which has a much higher Load Range E rating.
2. for protection i spent around $650 on a Tuffant Land Rover Defender Front Skid Plate made of 5mm alloy. it was affordable but yeah the fitment wasnt perfect.
3. i also wasted $200 on cheap recovery boards that snapped in the cold. tbh i basically wasted half my budget on stuff that didnt last... so yeah. what are u thinking for the armor??
