I just picked up my 2024 GX 550 Overtrail last week and Im honestly terrified of scratching it already but my friends are dragging me to Moab in like three weeks. Ive been looking at accessories online and I saw some people saying the CBI covert bumpers are a must-have for clearance but then others on the forums say the factory skids are actually decent enough for beginners. Im super stressed because my budget is pretty tight right now maybe two grand at most after that huge down payment. Do I really need to swap the factory side steps for real rock sliders right away or can I get away with just better tires for now? What are the absolute essential first mods so I dont wreck my new baby on the trails?
Smashed my rear housing once, so make sure to watch that clearance.
Late to the party but @Reply #1 - good point! I disagree slightly on the priority. Moab is brutal on sidewalls and those factory tires are often standard load. Focus on these safety essentials instead:
congrats on picking up the gx 550 man. honestly if youre headed to moab on a 2k budget i would skip the fancy bumpers for now and focus on protection. i have been really satisfied with how the factory skids have held up so far, they work well enough for most trails you will hit as a beginner. the big thing is those side steps... they will get crushed if you even look at a rock wrong. i swapped mine for Westcott Designs GX 550 Rock Sliders 0 Degree and they have been solid. it is such a relief knowing i wont crush a rocker panel. since the overtrail comes with decent rubber, maybe just grab a ARB Twin Air Compressor High Performance Portable so you can air down properly. airing down is basically a cheat code for traction and comfort. you are gonna have a blast out there!
