Hey everyone! I just recently picked up a new Mazda CX-90 PHEV and I’m absolutely loving the ride so far. However, I’ve quickly realized that the included Level 1 charger just isn't cutting it for my daily commute. It takes forever to get back to a full charge overnight, so I’m looking to upgrade to a Level 2 home charging station to take full advantage of that 17.8 kWh battery.
I’ve been doing some research, but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. Since the CX-90 has a 7.2 kW onboard charger, I want to make sure I get something that can actually hit those speeds without overpaying for features I don't need. I’m stuck between getting a hardwired unit for maximum reliability or a NEMA 14-50 plug-in model for flexibility. My budget is around $500-$700, and I’d prefer something with a solid mobile app to track charging costs and schedules.
Does anyone here have specific brands they recommend for the CX-90? I’ve seen ChargePoint and Grizzl-E mentioned a lot, but I’d love to hear from actual owners about what works best with Mazda’s software. For those of you with a Level 2 setup at home, which charger did you choose and how has the reliability been so far?
Curious about one thing: do you already have a 240v outlet in your garage, or are you planning to hire an electrician to run a new line soon??
Since you're looking for an alternative to the popular ones already mentioned, you might wanna look at the Enel X Way JuiceBox 40 Smart EV Charging Station with WiFi. It's super solid and hits that 40-amp mark which is perfect for your Mazda's 7.2 kW charger.
I've also been hearing good things about the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40A Level 2 EV Smart Charger, which is realy compact if space is an issue. Both have decent apps for tracking costs, but honestly, the wiring setup usually dictates which one is best... so lmk about your current electrical situation!
TL;DR: Check out the JuiceBox or Wallbox for great app support, but check your garage's wiring first.
Seconding the recommendation above for a smart charger, but I wanna chime in from a safety-first perspective. If you're looking for ultimate reliability and want to avoid any melting outlet scares, you should seriously consider the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger.
It's basically a tank and super safe cuz it lacks the complex WiFi chips that sometimes glitch out. If you really need the app features tho, the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp is a solid, UL-listed alternative that's usually way cheaper than ChargePoint but still hits that 7.2 kW limit easily. I'd definitely go hardwired if you can—it's just way more secure for long-term use, you know? anyway gl with the new Mazda!
Just caught this thread! Before I dive into advice, I'm kinda curious about a couple of things because honestly, the costs can reallyyy add up depending on ur setup.
1. Does ur utility company offer any specific rebates for smart chargers right now??
2. Are you planning to stay in your current home for a while, or do you need the portability to take the charger with you if you move?
It basically changes which one is the best value, you know?
Sooo I was in your exact shoes like two months ago with my new CX-90! The Level 1 was honestly a joke for my commute. I ended up getting the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 WiFi Enabled EV Charger and I'm super happy with it so far. It's reallyyy easy to use with the app to track my utility costs, and it hits that 7.2 kW max speed no problem. Kinda pricey but lowkey worth it for the reliability!! 👍
