Hey everyone! I finally took delivery of my Taycan 4S last week and I am absolutely loving the drive, but I am struggling a bit with the charging setup in my garage. The included Porsche Mobile Charger is way bulkier than I expected and the cable is quite stiff, which makes it a bit of a hassle to plug in every night.
I have a NEMA 14-50 outlet already installed, but I am seriously considering getting a dedicated wallbox or perhaps just a better mobile connector for when I travel. I have heard some mixed reviews about the Porsche hardware being prone to overheating or having software glitches, so I am looking into third-party options like the ChargePoint Home Flex or the Wallbox Pulsar Plus.
I am specifically looking for recommendations on:
Since this is my first EV, I really want to get the home setup right to avoid any headaches down the road. What accessories are you guys using to make your daily charging routine smoother?
Jumping in here to offer a slightly different take on the budget side. While I totally get the appeal of a smart charger, you might actually be overpaying for features your Taycan already has. The car itself lets you track sessions and set charging times through the Porsche app, so getting a pricey station with its own app is kinda redundant imo. I went with the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40A NEMA 14-50 and it is solid as a rock. It lacks the bells and whistles, but it saves you a few hundred bucks over the ChargePoint while being more durable. For the frunk, I use the Lectron NEMA 14-50 Level 2 EV Charger 240V 40 Amp because it is way less stiff and much easier to pack for road trips than the stock Porsche brick.
To add to the point above: honestly i am in the exact same boat as you and its driving me nuts. i spent a fortune on the 4S and i am still out here wrestling with that thick awkward porsche cable every single night like it is a frozen garden hose. been hunting for a lighter mobile setup for like three months now but everything i find is either way too expensive for what it is or just doesnt meet the technical specs i need. super frustrating that we pay this much for a high tech car and the daily charging routine feels like such a clunky chore... basically in the same spot where i cant find a decent answer either.
Congrats on the Taycan! Honestly, be really careful with that NEMA 14-50 outlet. I have seen way too many photos of melted sockets because people use cheap residential ones instead of industrial grade. Whatever you buy, just make sure it has a thermal sensor in the plug to stop it from overheating. I wouldnt risk a cheap brand just to save a few bucks, fire safety is the priority imo.
