So I finally swapped my old etron for a Taycan Cross Turismo last week and the car is incredible but man the Porsche Mobile Charger is acting up. Ive been an EV driver for five years now so I know the drill with Level 2 setups but this thing keeps tripping the thermal sensor on my NEMA 14-50 outlet even though my old setup never did that. Im planning a trip up the coast next month and really dont want to rely on the stock kit if its gonna be this finicky. Does anyone have a better rec for a rugged mobile connector or maybe a specific J1772 cable thats better for road trips? What are the actual must-have charging accessories for this car?

Congrats on the Taycan! Honestly, the stock Porsche charger is a known headache for overheating. I switched to the Grizzl-E Mini Level 2 EV Charger 40A and it works so well. No complaints at all. It handles the 40A draw without tripping sensors because the internal components are way beefier than the factory kit. Its super rugged for road trips too, basically a must-have for peace of mind.

@Reply #2 - good point! The stock unit is honestly trash for what the car costs, its kind of embarrassing for Porsche tbh. Late to the party but i gotta chime in because I went through the exact same headache with my Taycan last year. If you want something that basically never dies and handles heat like a champ, you gotta look at the J+ Booster 2 Portable EV Charger 40A. Its seriously built like a tank! You can literally drive over the control box and it wont even flinch, which is amazing for road trips where things get tossed around in the frunk or trunk. The main reason your Porsche charger is tripping is likely the overly sensitive thermal sensor logic they used. The J+ is way more robust and comes with different adapters that click in place perfectly. If you want something more budget-friendly just to keep as a backup, the Lectron 32 Amp Portable Level 2 EV Charger NEMA 14-50 is a fantastic value and honestly hasn't let me down yet. It is much more compact too. Also, definitely spend some time on PlugShare before your trip! Its the best resource for finding reliable Level 2 spots at hotels. I also recommend checking out the TaycanForum technical sections... there are some great threads about derating your charger to 32A if your home outlet is getting too hot, which might save you some stress while you wait for new gear. Youre gonna have a blast with the Cross Turismo once this is sorted, it is such a beast on the coast roads!

Unfortunately, the Porsche Mobile Charger is a massive letdown for such a high-end car. I had constant issues with my unit overheating even in mild weather, which is just not what you want on a road trip. The internal thermal monitoring in that specific kit is way too sensitive for NEMA 14-50 installs and its basically a known headache in the community. If you want something that actually holds up, I recommend the Tesla Mobile Connector Gen 2 combined with a Lectron Tesla to J1772 Adapter 48A 250V. Most EV enthusiasts eventually go this route because the Tesla hardware is much more robust and handles sustained loads without thermal throttling. The Tesla unit uses thicker internal wiring and better heat dissipation in the plug head, making it far more reliable than the stock Porsche kit. It isnt as flashy but it works every time. TL;DR: The stock Porsche kit has poor thermal engineering. Get a Tesla mobile unit and a J1772 adapter for a bulletproof road trip setup.
