Hey everyone! I just picked up a new Subaru Outback Wilderness and I’m dying to take it onto some rockier trails. While the factory protection is okay, I’m worried it won't hold up against a jagged rock strike to the oil pan or transmission. I’m looking for a full set of skid plates that offer maximum coverage without adding an insane amount of weight. I’ve been looking at brands like Primitive Racing and LP Aventure, but I’m torn between aluminum versus steel for durability. Has anyone here put these to the test on actual technical trails? I’m specifically looking for something with easy access for oil changes. Which setup provides the best peace of mind for the price?

In my experience, you should definitely go with the Primitive Racing Full Armor Skid Plate Set for 2022-2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness. Aluminum is the sweet spot because it's plenty tough for rock strikes but won't rust or sag like steel. I'm super satisfied with mine; it has a built-in oil drain hole that makes maintenance a breeze without removing the whole plate. Honestly, it's the best value for total peace of mind! 🏔️

Seconding the recommendation above! Aluminum is definitely the way to go for the Outback. Since you're worried about oil changes, I actually suggest looking at the LP Aventure Front Skid Plate for 2022-2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness.

It's super beefy but has great access points. Honestly, I've tried many setups over the years, and adding the LP Aventure Differential Skid Plate for the rear gives that extra peace of mind when crawling over those jagged rocks. Good luck!

Hi there! Honestly, I'm pretty new to the off-roading scene myself, but I've been obsessing over the same thing since I got my Wilderness. Before you drop big money on the high-end brands mentioned already, you might want to consider checking out the Rival 4x4 Aluminum Full Skid Plate Kit for 2022-2024 Subaru Outback. It's a bit more budget-friendly and seems like a solid value for the price.

One thing to be careful about though—I've heard some people say that certain plates can trap heat or make a weird rattling noise if they aren't lined up perfectly. Make sure to double-check the torque specs during install! For more research, there's a great resource at the SubaruOutback.org forums where users post photos of how these plates actually look after hitting rocks. It's super helpful to see real-world damage before buying. I think the Rival ones have oil drain holes too, which is a huge plus! Hope this helps!

Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year and, honestly, I learned the hard way that "good enough" usually isn't when you're miles from cell service. I initially skimped on protection, and unfortunately, I ended up with a nasty dent in my transmission pan after a slow-speed crawl. Safety and reliability are everything to me now.

I eventually swapped everything out for the ASFIR 4x4 Aluminum Engine Skid Plate for Subaru Outback Wilderness and their matching transmission guard. Comparing aluminum vs steel, I found aluminum is much better for heat dissipation and weight, but it can "grab" rocks more than steel. That said, the 6mm thickness on the Asfir stuff feels way safer than the thinner 3/16" options. I also looked at the Ironman 4x4 Steel Underbody Protection Kit for Subaru Outback for pure durability, but the rust potential and weight were dealbreakers for me. Always prioritize the oil pan first—losing your oil in the woods is a nightmare. Stay safe out there!

Ugh, the struggle is real. I’ve spent way too many hours swearing under my car because these so-called perfect skid plates turn a simple 20-minute oil change into a total nightmare. It’s honestly so frustrating how most brands don't seem to think about the person actually turning the wrenches in their driveway. I'm just so tired of the mess and the alignment issues... it’s like you can’t win sometimes. If you're still looking for options tho, you might want to consider the Anderson Design & Fabrication ADF Front Skid Plate Subaru Outback Wilderness. The fitment is a bit more realistic for home mechanics compared to some of the flashier brands. Be careful with the hardware on some kits, because bolts tend to strip way too easily if you aren't perfect with the torque. I would suggest checking out the Body Armor 4x4 Engine Skid Plate Subaru Outback too. It’s a solid alternative that’s a bit more budget-friendly for a DIY setup. Just make sure to double-check your clearances before hitting the trails, because plates can vibrate against the frame if they aren't shimmed right. It's a huge pain to get it perfect, but beats a rock through your oil pan.

Re: "Just sharing my experience: I went through this..."

  • I totally feel that, but unfortunately my own experience with some of these big names was way more frustrating than I expected. Trying to be super cautious is usually my move, but things still went south. It actually reminds me of a trip my cousin and I took out to the desert last year. We spent a fortune on what we thought was the reliable setup:
  • Spent six hours in the garage installing everything
  • Double checked all the clearance for the oil pan
  • Thought we were invincible on the rocky sections Well, we barely got ten miles onto the trail before this weird vibration started and we had to turn back. Spent the whole weekend at a crappy motel waiting for a shop to open instead of actually wheeling. It was such a letdown after all that research. I really want to help you avoid that kind of headache, but sometimes even the stuff people swear by still lets you down. Keep us posted on how yours turns out tho!
