Hey everyone! With winter just around the corner, I’m finally looking to install a remote starter on my 2021 Subaru Forester. I’ve been debating between getting the official Subaru OEM long-range remote or going with an aftermarket brand like Compustar or Viper. I’m a bit hesitant about the OEM one because I’ve heard the engine shuts off as soon as you open the driver's door, which seems pretty annoying for daily use. On the other hand, I want something reliable that won't mess with the electrical system or void my warranty. Does anyone have experience with a specific plug-and-play kit that works well with the Forester's push-to-start system? What brand would you recommend for the best range and reliability?

In my experience, you're spot on about the OEM frustration—it’s honestly a dealbreaker for me. I’ve installed several units on Foresters, and that "engine shut-off" safety feature is just standard Subaru logic, unfortunately. If you want a true plug-and-play setup that allows "secure takeover" (so the car stays running when you get in), I really recommend the Compustar CSX4905S-KIT with BLADE-AL.

I’ve used this specific kit on a 2021 model, and the range is incredible—way better than the factory fob. It costs around $450-$550 installed depending on your local shop, but it’s worth every penny for the reliability. Another solid, slightly cheaper path is the Start-X Remote Starter for Subaru Forester 2019-2024 Push to Start, which is great for DIYers. But yeah, stick with Compustar if you want the best long-term results without the annoying shut-off. Hope this helps!

Quick question - before I dive into the technical specs, are you planning on doing the install yourself or taking it to a pro? I'm asking because the 2021 Forester has some pretty specific data-bus requirements for the push-to-start system. Honestly, safety is the biggest thing here; you don't want a sloppy wiring job messing with your EyeSight sensors or the factory immobilizer.

I'm still learning the ropes, but from what I've gathered, you might want to look at the Fortin EVO-ONE All-In-One Remote Starter, Security System and Data Interface. It's often cited as a reliable alternative to the units mentioned earlier. Also, the iDatalink Maestro HC2 2-Way Remote Start System is known for being very stable with Subaru electronics. Tip: Make sure any kit you pick includes a T-Harness to avoid cutting factory wires, which keeps things much safer for your warranty! Let me know about the install plan and I can dig up more details.

Hmm, I’ve had a different experience when it comes to those high-end aftermarket setups. While Compustar is great, the installation costs for those systems can really spiral if you aren't doing it yourself, especially with the extra bypass modules needed for a 2021 Forester.

I actually went through this last winter and, honestly, I'd suggest a different approach if you're looking to save some cash. I ended up getting the Start-X Remote Starter Kit for Subaru Forester 2019-2023 Push-to-Start. It’s a complete plug-and-play kit that uses your existing factory key fob (triple-click lock to start).

Pros:
- Way cheaper than a full Viper install.
- No wire splicing, so it's much safer for your warranty.
- Takes about 15 minutes to install.

That said, it DOES still shut off when you open the door—that’s just a Subaru security thing that's hard to bypass without getting really invasive with the wiring. But for the price, I can live with restarting the car! Just make sure to double-check your trim level compatibility before buying. Hope this helps!

For your situation, I would suggest looking into the Compustar CSX4905-S-KIT with 2-Way Remote. It's a solid alternative to the OEM unit because it allows for 'secure takeover,' meaning your engine won't shut off when you open the door!

Another great option is the Viper DS4+ Remote Start System. Both are reliable, but Compustar's range is honestly superior for those freezing mornings. They're basically plug-and-play with the right T-harness!

Regarding what #6 said about "Quick question - before I dive into the..."

  • I actually handled the whole thing myself in the driveway! Honestly, getting a remote start was the single best thing I've ever done for my Forester. I've had this car for years and used to absolutely dread those freezing January mornings. I vividly remember one time it was so cold my locks were practically frozen, but ever since I installed my unit, the car is always toasty and ready to go. It is seriously amazing! You should definitely just look at iDataStart gear. You seriously cant go wrong with them! They are super practical and way more cost-effective than going to a dealer for the OEM stuff. I love mine because it’s been incredibly solid through several rough winters now and I havent had a single electrical glitch. Just find any of their modules that work with your model year... they're basically designed to be super reliable. It’s such a fantastic feeling to walk out to a defrosted windshield while everyone else is still out there shivering and scraping ice. Love it!

Like someone mentioned, those basic kits are okay for a quick fix, but unfortunately, I've been pretty disappointed with the signal penetration on most RF remotes. If you're parking behind a building or even just inside a mall, the range on those standard 1-way remotes is just not as good as expected. I'd honestly suggest looking into the DroneMobile X1-MAX LTE Module paired with a compatible brain. It uses cellular so range basically becomes infinite as long as you have signal. Quick tip tho: if you go this route, check which carrier the module uses. Most are AT&T, so if your house is a dead zone for them, you're gonna have a bad time. Just double check the coverage map first so you dont waste your money.
