I recently picked up a new Subaru Solterra, and while I’m absolutely loving the AWD performance, I’m quickly realizing that the standard Level 1 charging cable provided with the car is just too slow for my daily needs. I’m planning to have a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet installed in my garage soon, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of Level 2 charging stations and accessories available online.

Since the Solterra has a 6.6 kW onboard charger, I know I don’t necessarily need a high-amperage 48-amp unit, but I definitely want something durable and smart-phone compatible. Beyond the charger itself, I’m looking for advice on cable management. My garage is a bit cramped, so I’m interested in high-quality wall hooks or retractable systems that keep the heavy cord off the floor and away from my tires. I've also been looking at J1772 dock holsters to keep the connector clean and protected when not in use.

I’m trying to keep my total hardware budget around $600 to $700. For those of you who have been charging your Solterra at home for a while, which brands have been the most reliable for you, and are there any specific cord organizers you’d consider 'must-haves' for a clean setup?

Honestly, since you're on a budget and the Solterra is capped at 6.6 kW anyway, I'd suggest the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp with NEMA 14-50 Plug. It's super reliable and the app is actually better than the expensive ones! For the cord, grab a Wallbox Power Boost Cable Holder and Holster—it's cheap and keeps things tidy. Works well for me!

Seconding the recommendation above for sure! Honestly, if you wanna stay under budget, basically skip the $700 units. Since the Solterra is capped at 6.6 kW, the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 14-50 Plug is a tank and costs way less. For the cord, I'd *definitely* suggest the Camco Driveway Cord Protector and Wall Hook to keep things tidy without spending a fortune tho. Just make sure your 14-50 outlet is high-quality like a Hubbell HBL9450A 50A Receptacle so it doesn't melt, cuz safety first!! 👍

In my experience, you definitely want to prioritize safety over the fanciest tech, especially since ur just starting out with the Solterra. Here is what I have learned so far:

1. For the charger, I think Grizzl-E or ChargePoint are great bets. I went with a smart one cuz I like checking the app, but honestly... I barely look at it now lol. Just make sure it is UL-listed!!
2. SERIOUSLY, tell ur electrician to use a high-quality industrial outlet like a Hubbell or Bryant. I have heard the cheap $10 ones from big box stores can actually melt under the constant load of an EV... kinda scary tbh.
3. For cable management, I use a simple heavy-duty wall hook. Retractable systems are cool but maybe overkill? A basic J1772 dock is a MUST though to keep the connector gunk-free.
4. IIRC, my whole setup was right around $650, so ur budget is basically perfect.

Not 100% sure on every brand, but sticking to the well-known ones has kept my garage from burning down so far! gl!
