My old clunker just totally died on me and I need a replacement by next Monday for a new job commute near San Diego. I really want that new Model 3 everyone calls the Highland but honestly I have no idea how to actually find one for sale right now or if thats even the real name. Is Highland like an official thing I should search for on the Tesla site or is it just what people call the 2024 version?? Sorry if this is a super dumb question but Im so stressed and have about 42k saved up. Does anyone know a specific place near SoCal that has them ready to go today or how I find them...

Hey, dont stress too much about the name thing. Highland is basically just the internal project code that leaked online. If you look at the actual Tesla website or your registration, its just gonna say 2024 Model 3. Over the years, I have tracked every hardware revision they have done, and this one is the biggest change since the car launched back in 2017. In my experience, you want to look at the specific visual cues to make sure you are getting the new one. The headlights are much slimmer and they finally added ventilated seats, which are a lifesaver in San Diego heat. With your 42k, you are in a great spot for the base model, but keep an eye on the out-the-door price with taxes. Here is exactly how you find one by Monday:

  • Go to the Tesla site and hit the Inventory section rather than the Custom Order page. Custom builds take weeks, but inventory is sitting there ready for pickup.
  • Filter by zip code 92101 or 92008 for the Carlsbad area.
  • Look for the Tesla Model 3 2024 Rear-Wheel Drive as that fits your 42k budget best.
  • If you see a Tesla Model 3 2024 Long Range All-Wheel Drive, it might be over your budget, but sometimes they discount demo vehicles that have like 50 miles on them. I remember when I was hunting for a specific trim last year, I had to refresh that inventory page every hour. The Kearny Mesa and Carlsbad locations usually get shipments on Fridays, so if you check tonight or tomorrow morning, you should see plenty of the new body styles available for immediate pickup.

Regarding what #1 said about not stressing the name, its definitely important to be careful when searching the actual inventory pages. I would suggest looking for the Tesla Model 3 2024 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive instead of the standard base model. Its a newer configuration that fits your budget better than the AWD version but gives you much more range for that San Diego commute. Make sure to check the Carlsbad delivery center inventory specifically... they sometimes have stock that other locations dont show. Be careful with the online delivery estimates tho, as they are often too optimistic. You really need to see the Available Today status to make that Monday deadline. Also, dont forget to factor in a Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 for home charging. Relying on superchargers for a new job commute is kinda risky and stressful imo.

Tbh the new build quality is kinda disappointing lately. Quick question tho:

  • How many miles is that commute?
  • Do you have home charging? Just wanna make sure this actually fits your budget.
