Has anyone installed a roof rack on their Model Y? I'm planning a camping trip and need to transport bikes and gear. The Tesla official one seems pricey at $500, so I'm curious about quality third-party options.

Specifically looking for:

  • Installation difficulty
  • Wind noise impact
  • Weight capacity
  • Price point

Also wondering if crossbars alone would work or if I need a full rack system. Would appreciate photos of your setup if you have them. Any regrets or things you wish you'd known before purchasing?

Thanks in advance!

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.

I looked at the official one too but ended up going third-party to save some cash. Honestly, the glass on these cars is pretty fragile so you gotta be careful during the install process.

  • Check out the Tesmanian Tesla Model Y Roof Rack Aluminum Cross Bars. They usually run around $299 and the quality is surprisingly solid for the price.
  • Make sure to use a torque wrench when tightening the nuts. If you over-tighten, you risk cracking that panoramic roof. I would suggest staying right at 4 or 5Nm max to be safe.
  • Be careful with those mounting clips. You need to make sure they are hooked into the specific V notches under the glass or you will have issues with stability later on.
  • Wind noise is definitely a thing. You might want to consider adding something like the Yakima WindShield 40 inch fairing if the whistling bothers you on the highway. It is definitely doable on a budget, just dont rush the setup and double check the alignment. Let me know if you need more info on the weight limits for specific bike racks!

I installed the official Tesla rack last summer. Yes, it's pricey but installation was super simple - took maybe 15 minutes total. Wind noise is minimal at highway speeds, barely noticeable with music on. It's handled our four bikes with no issues. The clean look and perfect fit made it worth the investment for me. One tip: apply the included protective film EXACTLY as directed or you'll regret it later.
