Looking for recommendations on quality tires for my Model Y with 20-inch wheels. I need something with good tread life that performs well in both dry and wet conditions. Currently considering Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 and Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus.

What are you using? How's the road noise, range impact, and handling? Any brands to avoid?

Thanks!

I am honestly in the exact same spot with my 20-inch rims and it is so frustrating. I have been nerdily tracking my watt-hour per mile stats and looking at treadwear ratings for the last month, but I still cannot find a clear winner that actually makes financial sense. It is like every tire that fits the performance specs is way too expensive for the mileage you actually get out of them. Still havent pulled the trigger on anything because I am just stuck in analysis paralysis trying to save a few bucks... really wish there was a more obvious choice for us.

  • honestly those generic guides sometimes miss the specific quirks of the Model Y suspension. I went through this exact headache about six months ago when the factory rubber on my 20-inch Inductions hit the wear bars at only 18k miles. It was a total gut punch. I wanted something that wouldnt kill my range but didnt cost $1,500 for a set like the Michelins. I ended up taking a gamble on the Hankook iON evo AS SUV 255/40R20 because they are built specifically for heavy EVs. Before I get too deep into the specs tho, how many miles are you actually hoping to get out of these? If you are a heavy-footed driver who loves launching from every light, that really changes which compound makes sense for your wallet. Tbh the Hankooks have been a solid surprise for me. The road noise dropped significantly compared to the stock tires and my efficiency actually got a tiny bit better, maybe 5 percent? If you want to go even cheaper without losing quality, the Vredestein Quatrac Pro 255/40R20 is a huge sleeper hit in the Tesla community. They are usually way more affordable than the big name brands and handle rain like a champ, tho they might hit your range just a tiny bit more than the Hankooks.

After testing several options on my Performance Model Y, I've found Michelin Pilot Sport 4S provides the best balance of grip, range, and longevity. They're pricey ($250-300 per tire) but deliver exceptional handling without severe range impact.

Continental ExtremeContact Sport offers comparable performance at a slightly lower price point. They excel in wet conditions but tend to wear slightly faster than the Michelins in my experience.

For all-season reliability, the CrossClimate 2 has become popular among Model Y owners seeking year-round performance without seasonal swaps. They sacrifice some summer grip but handle light snow surprisingly well.

If range efficiency is your priority, Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus provides lower rolling resistance, potentially adding 5-10 miles per charge versus performance-oriented options.

Consider your climate and driving style carefully. Performance-oriented rubber like the PS4S will wear quickly under heavy acceleration, while touring tires last longer but sacrifice cornering grip.

Remember that even the best 20" options will deliver a firmer ride than 19" alternatives. The tradeoff is improved steering response and that distinctive Performance stance that turns heads.

Regarding what #4 said about "Just take a look at this guide:Best All-Season..." - most generic guides honestly overlook how the weight of the Model Y shreds standard tires. I've tried many sets over the years and found that EV-specific compounds are the only way to get real longevity. In my experience, the Hankook iON evo AS SUV 255/40R20 is currently the best alternative for 20-inch rims. They are designed specifically for high torque, which helps significantly with tread life. Another solid choice is the Goodyear ElectricDrive GT 255/40R20 because the foam liner really helps with highway noise. Two quick tips for the DIY crowd: always verify your alignment even if the car feels straight, as factory settings are often slightly out. Also, make sure you're rotating them yourself every 5,000 miles. These heavy EVs are brutal on rubber if you ignore the maintenance.

I'm using Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 on my Model Y. Excellent handling, minimal road noise, and negligible range impact. Both are great, but Michelin edges out in performance.
