Hey everyone! I finally took delivery of my Cybertruck a few weeks ago, and while it’s been an absolute blast as a daily driver, I’m dying to see what it can really do once the pavement ends. I’m planning a trip out to some desert trails and rocky paths next month, and I want to make sure I’m properly prepared before I head out into the middle of nowhere.
I’ve been looking at the official Tesla gear like the overhead light bar, but I’m wondering what the community thinks are the truly "essential" items for off-road performance. Specifically, I’m a bit nervous about the underbody; has anyone installed additional skid plates, or do you think the factory protection is enough for moderate rock crawling? Also, considering how heavy this beast is, I’m looking for recovery gear recommendations—like heavy-duty traction boards or specific kinetic ropes—that can actually handle the Cybertruck's weight. I've also heard mixed things about whether I need a dedicated portable air compressor or if the onboard system is fast enough for airing back up after a day on the sand.
I really want to avoid over-packing, but I also don't want to be the guy who gets stuck because he missed a basic piece of kit. For those of you who have already hit the dirt, what are the top 3 accessories you wouldn't leave home without?
yo! jumping in here cuz i actually went through this exact same dilemma last month. honestly, i was sooo stressed about the underbody too. i spent way too much time comparing the Tesla Cybertruck Basecamp skid plate situation vs the Unplugged Performance Underbody Armor system. basically, the factory shield is okay for gravel, but i highkey felt more confident after seeing how beefy the aftermarket steel options are.
in my experience, i tried to save some cash by using the onboard air at first, but man, it's kinda slow when you're tired and just wanna get home... i ended up grabbing a Tire Inflator Portable Air Compressor 150PSI just to have a backup. it was pretty cheap and definitely saved me some stress when the built-in system was taking its sweet time. basically, i realized that even though this truck is a beast, being budget-conscious doesnt mean skipping the basics! gl with the desert trip!!
Respectfully, I’d actually suggest a different approach for safety. Given the CT's insane weight, gear failure is a huge risk, so you gotta prioritize your connections first.
* Factor 55 Crosby 3/4 inch Bow Shackle – dont trust cheap gear with 7,000 lbs.
* Garmin inReach Mini 2 Satellite Communicator – seriously, if you're alone in the desert, this is more essential than any skid plate!!
Highkey, the onboard air is fine for sand, just takes a bit longer. gl!
Honestly, you dont need to spend thousands right away to have a safe time. I spent some time researching what actually matters for a heavy truck like the CT without breaking the bank. The factory protection is decent for moderate stuff, but a tire failure is way more likely than a punctured battery in my experience. Here is what i keep in my truck:
In my experience, you definitely gotta prioritize the weight of this beast when picking gear. Here’s my top 3 for the dirt:
1. **Recovery Gear:** Don't mess around with standard ropes; you need the Yankum Ropes 1 1/4" Kinetic Recovery Rope (30 foot) because it’s rated for the CT's insane GVWR. Normal stuff will literally snap like a rubber band.
2. **Traction:** Get some MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Boards. They're basically the industry standard for a reason and can handle the pressure when you're bogged down in sand.
3. **Air Management:** Honestly, the onboard air is okay for small adjustments, but for a full set of 35s, it’s slow. I always carry a ARB Maximum Performance Portable Twin Air Compressor (12V) to get back to highway PSI way faster.
Also, skip the extra skid plates for now unless you're doing serious rock crawling—the factory armor is actually pretty solid for moderate trails!! Just watch your clearance... gl out there! 👍
