I recently took delivery of my Toyota bZ4X and finally got the 2-inch activity mount installed. Now that the hitch is ready, I’m looking for the perfect bike rack to pair with it. Since the bZ4X has that unique split rear spoiler and a fairly low-profile stance, I’m a bit worried about ground clearance and whether certain racks might interfere with the rear sensors or the backup camera view.
I’m currently looking for a platform-style rack that can securely hold two heavy electric mountain bikes (about 50 lbs each), so weight capacity is a big factor for me. I’ve been eyeing the Kuat NV 2.0 or maybe something from Thule, but I’m curious if anyone has found a specific model that fits the geometry of the bZ4X particularly well. Does anyone have experience with a rack that doesn't trigger the auto-braking sensors when it's folded up? Also, if you’re using one, how much has it impacted your range on highway trips? I'd love to hear your setups and any pros or cons you've discovered!
Ok so I've been geeking out over this exact setup because the bZ4X has some quirks with that activity mount! Since you're hauling two 50lb ebikes, you're basically at the limit of what most racks can handle when you factor in the rack weight itself. In my experience, you really have two top-tier options that handle the ground clearance and weight perfectly.
First, I gotta recommend the Kuat NV 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack. It's literally amazing for heavy ebikes cuz the build quality is tank-like. The ground clearance is solid, but the real win is the integrated repair stand—super handy for mid-trip adjustments. The downside? It's pricey and heavy as heck to take on and off. Also, it'll definitely trigger the bZ4X's auto-braking when you're in reverse unless you disable the sensors manually every time.
Alternatively, check out the 1UP USA 2-Inch Super Duty Double Rack. Seriously, this thing is a masterpiece of engineering. It's basically all aluminum, so it wont rust, and the "stepped" design keeps the bikes higher off the ground which helps with the bZ4X's departure angle. Plus, it's way more modular than the Thule stuff.
Regarding range, honestly... expect a 15-20% hit on the highway. The bZ4X is already sensitive to aero, and sticking two big mountain bikes back there is like pulling a small parachute. But hey, for the trail access? Totally worth it!! good luck dude 👍
Solid advice 👍
Not to disagree, but i've had a different experience when it comes to prioritizing those fancy brands. Honestly, with 100lbs of ebikes on a bZ4X, I'd suggest a different approach focused purely on SAFETY. Those lightweight racks feel wierdly shaky at highway speeds, especially with the bZ4X's low stance.
* Just get a heavy-duty steel rack from Hollywood Racks
* Look for anything with a high tongue weight rating
* Avoid the aluminum stuff
It's basically about peace of mind cuz losing a bike on the freeway is literally my nightmare! 👍
In my experience, the bZ4X’s 2-inch hitch setup is decent, but 100 lbs of bike weight plus the rack itself puts a lot of stress on the tongue weight capacity. I've looked at the specs, and you gotta be careful with the departure angle too. To give you the best advice, I've got a couple questions:
1. What's the wheelbase of ur e-mountain bikes? Some of the longer e-MTBs don't fit well on standard platforms, and that can REALLY mess with ur range if they stick out too far.
2. Does ur bZ4X have the bird’s-eye view camera system?? Basically, certain rack designs block the lenses differently, and I wanna make sure you don't lose that visibility.
Honestly, I've compared a few tray setups, and some are MUCH better at staying clear of the proximity sensors. Anyway, let me know those details so I can help you pick the right brand. gl!
