Looking for the best roof rack systems for an Audi SQ5.

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2021 Audi SQ5 and I’m absolutely loving the performance, but I’ve quickly realized I need some extra utility for my weekend trips. I’m currently looking for the best roof rack systems that won't compromise the sleek look of the car too much or create a ton of wind noise when I'm on the highway.

I’ve been looking at the Thule WingBar Edge because of the low-profile design, but I’ve also seen some people swearing by the Yakima JetStream or even the OEM Audi bars. My main concern is the sunroof clearance—I really want to make sure I can still vent or open the panoramic roof without hitting the clamps. I’ll mostly be using it to haul two mountain bikes and the occasional Thule Motion XT cargo box for ski trips.

Has anyone here installed a specific system on their SQ5 that they’re particularly happy with? I’m curious if the OEM bars sit too high or if the aftermarket ones are worth the extra investment for the noise reduction. Which specific setup would you recommend for the best balance of aesthetics and functionality?

Not to disagree, but honestly, I've had a different experience with those pricey setups. Late to the party, but after analyzing the market data, I actually suggest a different approach. Instead of dropping $600+, I've been super happy with the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black 2 Bar Roof Rack. It's basically half the price of the Thule and sits lowkey enough to look OEM but actually clears the sunroof. Plus, it's rated for 165lbs—literally perfect for a Thule Motion XT L Cargo Box or two bikes. Save that extra cash for gas, you know? 👍

yo!! congrats on the new ride, the SQ5 is honestly such a blast to drive!! ok so, before you bolt anything on, you gotta think about the engineering behind these setups. the main thing is that sunroof clearance... basically, if you get a bar thats too low-profile, the glass hits the clamps when it tilts up. it's highkey scary lol.

I mean, if you want to save some serious cash while staying safe, definitely check out the Rhino-Rack Vortex 2500 Black 2 Bar Roof Rack. it's usually way cheaper than Thule, like around $450-$500 total, and honestly, the quality is fantastic!! for the bikes, i'm lowkey obsessed with the RockBros Suction Cup Bike Rack cuz it doesnt even touch your rails, so zero sunroof stress!! if you prefer a traditional tray, the RockyMounts BrassKnuckles Bike Rack is super solid and often on sale. just be careful and maybe double-check your clearances with a piece of foam first? better safe than sorry!! gl with the setup!!

Seconding the recommendation above! That panoramic roof is basically a giant stress ball waiting to pop if you aren't careful, so yeah, definitely watch those clearances.

I've been messing with roof setups for years and honestly, while the Thule WingBar Edge looks sick, it's a massive investment. If you're looking for a budget-friendly way to get the same utility without the "Audi Tax," you should check out the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar. I've found they sit just a bit higher than the Thule bars—giving you that crucial sunroof vent clearance—but they still have that sleek, integrated look for around $150–$200 less.

Another pro-tip for saving cash: instead of the pricey OEM bike mounts, look at the RockyMounts BrassKnuckles. They're super solid, hold your mountain bikes by the front wheel (so no frame contact!), and usually retail for way less than the Thule equivalents.

In my experience, the OEM bars are actually the loudest because they sit so high and aren't as aerodynamic as the aftermarket stuff. If you're worried about highway drone while hauling your Thule Motion XT XL, the extra money for a set of aerodynamic bars like the Yakima JetStream Bar is highkey worth it. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between cost and noise, right? Good luck with the build, the SQ5 is a beast! 👍

Sooo I actually just went through this with my 2021 SQ5 and honestly, I was super nervous about that panoramic sunroof too... I've heard some horror stories about people cracking the glass because the clamps were too tight or the box sat too low, so definitely be careful!

Here's what I recommend based on my setup:

- **The Safe Choice:** I ended up going with the Audi SQ5 OEM Roof Rack Base Carrier Bars because I'm a bit of a beginner with this stuff and wanted to be 100% sure they wouldn't mess up the car. They definitely sit a little higher than the Thule ones - which kinda ruins the "sleek" look you want - but the clearance for the sunroof is basically guaranteed. I can vent the roof no problem even with my Thule Motion XT L Cargo Box attached.

- **The "Looks" Choice:** If you really want that low-profile vibe, the Thule WingBar Edge is basically the gold standard. But seriously, make sure you check the clearance every single time you mount something new. I've seen some guys say they can't fully open the roof with certain bike rack clamps... it's a tight fit for sure.

- **For the Bikes:** I use the Thule ProRide XT Upright Bike Rack and it's been pretty solid for my mountain bikes. It's easy to use, but I'd suggest double-checking the torque on the bolts because I'm always paranoid they'll wiggle loose on the highway lol.

Maybe ask a professional at a shop to do the first install? I did that cuz I didn't want to scratch my paint. It might cost more but idk, the peace of mind is worth it tbh. Good luck!! 👍
