Hey everyone! Planning a cross-country trek in my e-tron and I'm worried about charger reliability at some stops. Does anyone have recommendations for a heavy-duty, portable Level 2 cable that handles high amperage well? I need something durable with a long reach for awkward hotel parking. What’s your go-to backup cable for long hauls?

Honestly, for my e-tron trips, I basically just use a heavy-duty 25ft cable I got online. It's totally saved me at hotels with blocked chargers. TL;DR: Go long and high-amperage, it’s worth it.

Honestly, after doing a few long hauls across the country in my e-tron, I've learned that the community is totally right about not skimping on the wire gauge. I spent a lot of time lurking in EV groups before my first big trek and the consensus was basically to find a setup that has built-in thermal monitoring. I remember one stop at a dusty old motel where the outlet was super looseβ€”the setup I use now actually throttled the speed down automatically because it detected the heat building up at the plug. If I’d just used a basic cable without those sensors, I probably would’ve melted the wall socket... or worse. It’s kinda crazy how much current these cars pull for hours on end compared to smaller EVs. Nowadays, I don't even look at the price tag as much as the safety certifications and what other owners are actually seeing in real-world testing. It’s definitely worth the peace of mind when you're sleeping in a room 50 feet away while the car is pulling 40 amps outside!!!

Jumping in here... I had a bit of a scare in Utah last summer. I was using a really cheap backup cable and it basically cooked itself overnight. After that, I got way more cautious about my gear. I've spent some time using the Mustart Level 2 Portable EV Charger 40 Amp and honestly, it is decent for the money but you might want to consider the heat issues. It gets pretty warm to the touch after a few hours. I ended up switching to the Grizzl-E Mini Portable EV Charger for my last trek to the coast. It is a bit bulkier to store, sure, but it feels way more industrial. The Mustart is easier to pack and lighter, but the Grizzl-E stays much cooler which gives me way more peace of mind at 3 AM. I would suggest checking the outlet for any weird smells or charred marks before you walk away tho. Some of those hotel plugs are ancient and loose... I actually carry a little infrared thermometer now just to be sure nothing is melting during the first hour. Better safe than sorry when you are hundreds of miles from a dealer.

Seconding the recommendation above for sure! Going long is actually the *only* way to survive those weird hotel spots. I'm pretty cautious about heat though, so I've been super satisfied with the Lectron NEMA 14-50 Level 2 EV Charger with 21ft Cable. It's basically the best budget-friendly pick around $200 right now. I mean, it's half the price of the OEM stuff but still feels sturdy. Just be careful with cheaper adapters from random brands because they can melt if they aren't UL-listed, and honestly, safety is everything when you're charging overnight! peace
