I just took delivery of my new Audi Q8 e-tron and I’m absolutely loving the ride, but I’ve realized I need a solid roof rack setup for my weekend trips. I’m looking for something that balances aerodynamics with ease of use, as I’m a bit worried about how much a rack might impact my range. Does anyone have experience with the OEM Audi bars versus something like the Thule WingBar Edge? I’m planning to carry two mountain bikes and occasionally a cargo box, so stability is a huge priority for me. For those already using a set, how is the wind noise at highway speeds, and which specific mounting system would you recommend for the Q8 e-tron flush rails?
Sooo I went through this last year and honestly, I was stressing way too much about the budget lol. Similar situation here—I had just picked up my Q8 e-tron and was terrified of what a rack would do to my range. I've been a rack guy for like ten years now, and I've learned that you definitely get what you pay for! I ended up just going with Thule because you seriously can't go wrong with them. I found a deal on some used bars and honestly, the savings was worth it. Ngl, I was so worried about the wind noise but after installing them, I barely noticed it unless I had the sunroof open! I mean, I'm still kinda new to the whole EV world, but I've found that keeping things sleek is key. Just get some bars from Thule and ur good to go!!! It’s such an amazing ride, right??
Honestly, my current setup barely hits range cuz it's lower profile than the OEM ones I tried. Basically, just make sure you torque those flush rail clamps to exactly 6Nm.

Sooo I literally just went through this with my Q8 e-tron last month! honestly, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to roof setups, so I was super nervous about the weight. WARNING: whatever you do, dont exceed the dynamic load limit for those flush rails. I read somewhere that if you overload them, it can actually mess with the car's sensors or even the panoramic roof seal... kinda scary right?
I went with the Thule setup because it looked a bit more low-profile, but i gotta say, the wind noise is still there at 70mph. It's like a soft whistle. also, i found that mounting the bike racks too close to the edge makes it feel way less stable in high winds. Basically, try to center your gear as much as possible, even if it's a reach! gl with the new ride though, it's such a beast!!
Seconding the recommendation above about being careful with the range! tbh I'm still a total beginner with my e-tron but I've been doing a ton of market research. Thule WingBar Edge is definitely the sleekest look, but you might wanna consider the Yakima JetStream Black 50 inch Crossbars too.
* **Thule Edge**: Super quiet, looks OEM, but kinda pricey.
* **Yakima JetStream**: A bit more versatile for different bike mounts, feels reallyyy sturdy.
I'm highkey leaning towards Yakima cuz I've heard the stability for mountain bikes is top tier. Just make sure the clamps are tight haha! gl!

Honestly, if you're worried about safety and the budget, I'd skip the pricey Audi Q8 e-tron OEM Roof Bars which usually run like $500+. I've been super satisfied with the Turtle Air 1 Roof Rack for Audi Q8 e-tron instead. It's basically half the price—around $200ish—and the low-profile design is actually pretty great for range because it sits so flush to the rails.
I've hauled my bikes on it and it feels rock solid, plus the wind noise is barely there even at 75mph. Just make sure you double-check the torque when mounting to the flush rails so nothing slides!! If you want the absolute best aero tho, the Thule WingBar Edge Rail Rack System is the gold standard, but it's definitely gonna cost you way more lol. Personally? The Turtle bars are a total steal for the quality you get. 👍
Man, I am in the exact same spot right now. I just got my Q8 e-tron and I have been stressing so much about which rack to get because I dont want to mess up the aero or the paint. Its a huge investment and honestly, the range hit is a real concern for me too. I would suggest looking at the Thule WingBar Evo 127 with the Thule Flush Rail Evo 710600 foot pack if you want something that feels super sturdy. I like the Evo bars over the Edge because they give you a bit more width, which you will definitely need if you are trying to squeeze two bikes and a cargo box up there at once. The Edge looks cool but the usable space is pretty limited tbh. Just be really careful with the mounting points on those flush rails. Make sure they are totally clean before you clamp anything down or you might end up with some nasty grit scratches. Also, maybe consider the Thule Motion XT XL if you need a box... it is shaped pretty well for EVs. Just keep an eye on your speed cuz those mountain bike handlebars really catch the wind and can tank your efficiency more than the rack itself will. Better safe than sorry!
Building on the earlier suggestion, I have been obsessing over the drag coefficients for these setups and honestly its ridiculous how much we have to pay just to carry a couple bikes. I remember when you could get a solid rack that didnt ruin your range or your bank account, but those days are long gone. It drives me crazy that we are basically beta testers for these companies now.
