I recently picked up a new Audi A3 and I'm absolutely loving the car, but I’ve quickly realized I need some extra cargo space for weekend trips. I’m specifically looking for a solid roof rack setup to carry my road bike and occasionally a slim cargo box, but I’m a bit torn on which direction to go.
I’ve been looking at the official Audi base carrier bars, but I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding wind noise and how high they sit on the roof. I’m also considering Thule or Yakima, especially the WingBar Edge or the JetStream, as I’ve heard they have a lower profile and look a bit more integrated with the A3’s sleek lines. Since this is a brand new car, I’m really concerned about the mounting points—I want something that fits perfectly without any risk of scratching the paint or damaging the weather stripping.
Does anyone here have experience with specific brands on the current A3 generation? I'm looking for a balance between a quiet ride at highway speeds and ease of installation. Should I stick with the OEM Audi racks for the guaranteed fit, or is there an aftermarket brand that offers a better aesthetic and less wind whistle?
So I totally get the struggle of trying to balance that clean Audi look with actual utility. Honestly, if you're looking for the best value without paying the "Audi tax" or the premium Thule price, you should check out the Rhino-Rack Vortex 2500 Black 2 Bar Roof Rack. I've used Rhino-Rack on a few builds now and the build quality is seriously impressive for the price.
Basically, these use a glass-reinforced nylon foot that fits the A3's contours perfectly, so you don't have to worry about the paint or weather stripping getting trashed. The bars have a VGS strip that literally cuts wind noise down to almost nothing at highway speeds. I mean, you'll still hear a little whistle if it's dead silent, but it's way better than the bulky OEM bars. Plus, they sit lower than the Audi ones, so your road bike won't look like it's hovering three feet off the roof lol. Definitely a solid middle-ground option that feels premium but saves you some cash for your trips. Hope that helps!!
yo, congrats on the new A3! honestly i was in the same boat literally last month and was sooo worried about scratching the paint on my new baby. since i'm kinda on a budget after the car payment, i actually went with the Audi A3 Roof Rack Base Carrier Bars because you can find them way cheaper than Thule if you look for used sets on eBay or FB Marketplace. i snagged mine for like $250!
tbh, the fit is amazing cuz they use the factory mounting points exactly. but yeah, they do sit a bit high which is kinda wierd looking at first. i mean, they definitely have some wind whistle at highway speeds, but for the price difference compared to a $600 Thule WingBar Edge setup, i can live with it!! if you want it quiet, maybe look at the Yakima JetStream bars but those get realy pricey once you add the towers and clips. id say start with the OEM ones and spend the saved cash on a better bike rack like the Thule ProRide XT! gl!
yo, congrats on the new A3! honestly i was in the same boat literally last month and was sooo worried about scratching the paint on my new baby. since i'm kinda a perfectionist, i spent forever researching this. even though the OEM bars mentioned before are a solid choice, i actually went with the Thule WingBar Edge for my car and i'm super happy with how it turned out.
Here's what I recommend based on my trial and error:
• Thule WingBar Edge vs OEM: The Thule setup is way lower profile. It basically looks integrated into the roof line rather than just sitting on top. Plus, the wind noise is basically zero even at highway speeds, which was my biggest fear.
• Yakima JetStream with Yakima Baseline Towers: This is another great alternative. It's really quiet too, but I found the mounting pads a bit bulkier than the Thule ones. Still very safe for the weather stripping though!
I mean, the OEM bars are definitely a guaranteed fit, but they're kinda loud?? If you want that sleek look for your road bike, the Thule WingBar Edge is highkey the way to go. Good luck! 👍
100% agree
Seconding the recommendation above about being careful with the mounting points! Honestly, since you're rocking a brand new A3, I highkey think you should prioritize a setup that emphasizes safety and load stability. While the OEM bars are cool, I've found that the Thule WingBar Edge is basically the gold standard for integrated looks without sacrificing security.
I've seen too many people try to save a few bucks only to have their rack whistle like crazy or, even worse, shift during a highway merge. If you're gonna be carrying a road bike, you really gotta look at the Thule ProRide XT bike rack to go with it. It’s super stable and doesn't touch the frame, which is a big win for protecting your bike's finish too.
Basically, the Thule system uses a custom fit kit that’s specifically engineered for the A3's roof line, so it won't mess with your weather stripping. It’s definitely an investment, but for a new car? Totally worth the peace of mind, right? gl!!
