Hey everyone! I just recently took delivery of a brand new BMW iX xDrive50, and man, this car is an absolute dream to drive. However, I’ve quickly realized that relying on the occasional public fast charger or the slow Level 1 emergency cable in my garage isn't going to cut it for the long haul. With that massive 111.5 kWh battery pack, I really need a reliable Level 2 home setup to ensure I’m waking up to a full charge every morning.
I’ve been doing some research, but the options are honestly a bit overwhelming. I know the iX can handle up to 11kW AC charging, so I’m looking for something that can ideally output 48 amps to maximize that speed. I’m stuck between a few popular options like the ChargePoint Home Flex, the Wallbox Pulsar Plus, or even just sticking with the official BMW Wallbox.
One of my main concerns is the app integration. I’d love something that plays nice with the car’s scheduling, or at least has a very solid app of its own so I can take advantage of my utility company’s off-peak electricity rates after midnight. Also, my garage layout is a bit awkward, so a charger with a longer, flexible cable (maybe 25 feet) would be a huge plus so I don’t have to park perfectly every single time.
I’m also debating whether I should go with a NEMA 14-50 plug-in unit for flexibility or just have my electrician hardwire the thing for maximum power and weather resistance. Budget-wise, I’m looking to stay under $700 for the unit itself, not including the installation.
For those of you who have been living with the iX for a while now, what home charger are you using? Have you experienced any connectivity issues or overheating with specific brands? I’d love to hear your recommendations on what provides the most seamless experience for this specific car!
Hi there, and congrats on the new iX! To get that 11kW charging speed for the 111.5 kWh battery, you really need a 48-amp output. Here's a quick heads-up: to hit 48A safely, you MUST hardwire the unit. A NEMA 14-50 plug is capped at 40A (on a 50A breaker) to follow the 80% rule for continuous loads. If you want the full speed the car supports, don't mess with plugs—it's a common mistake that leads to slower charging or even melted outlets if the hardware isn't top-tier.
In my experience, here is what works best:
1. **ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 WiFi Enabled EV Charger**: This is my top pick. It has a 23-foot cable that stays flexible in the cold, and the app is way better than the BMW native app for tracking utility costs. It can be hardwired for up to 50A.
2. **Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48 Amp Level 2 EV Charger**: Seriously compact and great if your garage is tight. It also handles 48A hardwired and has solid scheduling features.
3. **BMW Wallbox Gen 3**: Honestly, unless you really want the matching aesthetic, I'd skip it. The third-party apps usually offer more granular data for off-peak rates.
I've tried many over the years, and hardwiring the ChargePoint Home Flex is the most seamless way to wake up to 100% every morning. Good luck!
Re: wkdhnlgtgi - yeah, the hardwiring thing is non-negotiable if you want that 48A speed. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed with the official BMW options and some of the more expensive units. I had constant handshake issues where the car just wouldnt start charging after a scheduled delay, which is a total nightmare when you wake up and realize you cant even get to work... super annoying given how much these things cost. If you want my take, just look at any of the units from Grizzl-E. They are built like tanks and dont have all the fancy screens that tend to fail. For a real technical deep dive, you should definitely spend some time on the State of Charge YouTube channel. Tom does these insane teardowns looking at the internal contactors and thermal management that most people ignore. Its way better than reading marketing specs. Also, maybe check out the forums on iXForums for specific firmware talk, but basically just get a Grizzl-E Level 2 EV Charger and call it a day. Simple is usually better with these high-voltage setups anyway.
