Which essential home charging accessories should I buy for my BMW i4?

Just got the call that my i4 is arriving this Friday which is way earlier than the dealer said and now im panicking because my garage is basically a disaster and i have zero charging gear ready yet. I spent all night looking at stuff and i saw people saying the Wallbox Pulsar Plus is the way to go because of the app but then others say the official BMW Wallbox is better for integration whatever that means and it just makes it harder to choose. Im totally confused if i actually need to buy a separate cable too or if the one that comes with the car is enough for daily use or if it will just wear out the port if i keep plugging and unplugging it. I live in an old house in New Jersey so it gets freezing and i dont want to be messing with stiff frozen cables every morning if there is a better weather-rated option. My budget is roughly $1100 for the whole setup not including the electrician costs.

  • A heavy duty hook or some cable management thing so it doesnt trip me
  • Maybe some kind of rubber floor protector
  • A specific NEMA 14-50 adapter if i dont go hardwired

Is there anything else that is absolutely essential that i might be forgetting before the car shows up in 48 hours? I really dont want to be stuck using a slow wall outlet for weeks...

Ngl after years of messing with apps, i prefer stuff that just works. The Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40A is built like a tank and handles freezing temps better than anything else ive seen. If youre worried about the floor, get a Vevor 1-Channel Rubber Cable Protector Ramp so you dont trip. Its much safer and keeps the cable from getting crushed by your tires too.

Been through this a few times with different EVs. Tbh you should look up the State of Charge YouTube channel for his freezer tests... really helps see how these cables handle NJ winters. Ive been really satisfied with the ChargePoint Home Flex EV Charger because it has one of the most flexible cables on the market.

  • ChargePoint Home Flex: Super reliable, great app, cable stays limp even in sub-zero temps. It is near the top of your budget though.
  • Emporia Level 2 EV Charger: Best bang for your buck and lets you track every penny of electricity, but the cord is slightly chunkier. If you dont hardwire, tell your electrician to install a Hubbell HBL9450A 50 Amp 125/250V Receptacle specifically. The cheap ones from big box stores arent rated for hours of high-current charging and can actually melt. Avoid the generic ones at all costs.

Congrats on the i4!! Youre gonna love it! Honestly, dont worry about the port wearing out. For those NJ winters, I swear by the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48 Amp EV Charger because the cable stays way more flexible than the BMW one... its fantastic!
