so i just signed the papers for a 2024 lexus nx phev and it should be here by friday morning which is great but now im panicking because i realized i have zero idea how to actually charge the thing at home. the guy at the dealership was talking about level 2 charging and some sort of wall box thing but honestly it all went over my head and i was too embarrassed to ask more questions. im in seattle and it rains a lot so i dont know if i need a special cover for the plug or something? i have a regular outlet in my garage but i heard that takes forever.

i spent way more than i planned on the car so i dont have a massive budget left maybe a few hundred bucks for now. i see all these cables on amazon and im just so lost. i keep seeing things like:

  • j1772 adapters
  • cable organizers
  • heavy duty extension cords
  • weather seals

do i actually need any of that or does the lexus come with what i need? sorry if this is a totally basic question i just really dont want to break anything or have a dead car on saturday morning. what accessories are actually essential for home charging this thing?

Honestly the included cord works fine. I'm super satisfied with the Lectron J1772 EV Charger Nozzle Holster Dock for my garage... keeps everything tidy and safe from any floor moisture.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the holster is a total life saver for keeping that cable from getting tangled under your feet. Since you're in Seattle, the rain thing is a legit concern but honestly these plugs are designed with drainage in mind. Most of the time the water just runs right off the pins. If you're really worried about the port itself while parked outside, something like the EVSE Accessories Charging Port Cover Magnetic Waterproof works well to keep snow and heavy slush out of the connector. But technical talk for a sec... that 120V wall outlet you have is basically a trickle charge. The NX PHEV has a 18.1 kWh battery and a 6.6 kW onboard charger. On a standard outlet, you're looking at like 12-14 hours for a full top-off. If you can swing it later, getting a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed lets you use a proper Level 2 setup. I'd recommend the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40A NEMA 14-50 because it is built like a brick and handles rain or cold like a champ. Also, please dont use a heavy duty extension cord. Most of them arent rated for the continuous high amperage an EV pulls and they can literally melt or start a fire. Just stick with the factory cable for now until you're ready to upgrade the electrical in your garage... it's safer that way and saves you some cash while you recover from the car purchase.

> im in seattle and it rains a lot so i dont know if i need a special cover for the plug or something? i have a regular outlet in my garage... Late to the party but I went through this exact same process last year. Honestly, I was pretty paranoid about the electrical safety aspect because my house has older wiring. I ended up having a dedicated 240v circuit installed because relying on a standard 120v wall outlet felt like it was taxing the system too much for a daily charge. Im very satisfied with how stable the car stays on a proper dedicated line tho. It gives me peace of mind when its raining hard outside and everything is clicking along safely in the garage. Before you buy anything else, have you checked if your garage outlet is on a dedicated circuit or shares power with other appliances? Also, are you planning to charge every night or just when the battery hits zero? Knowing that helps narrow down the hardware.

Stumbled on this today. In my experience, skip extension cords—theyre fire hazards. Just grab a BougeRV EV Charger Cable Hook to keep cable weight from damaging your wall outlet.
