Hey everyone! I recently picked up a C7 Z06, and while the factory 650 hp is absolutely mental, I’m already starting to wonder how much more I can squeeze out of this platform. My goal is to improve the overall power delivery and cooling for some spirited weekend canyon runs and the occasional track day, but I want to keep it reliable as a semi-daily driver.
I’ve been looking into starting with the basics like a cold air intake and maybe a smaller supercharger pulley to bump up the boost, but I’m worried about the heat soak issues these cars are known for. I've also heard mixed things about whether I should jump straight to a ported blower or just stick with a solid tune first. Budget-wise, I'm looking to spend around $3,000–$5,000 for the first round of mods. I really want to make sure I’m getting the best bang for my buck without compromising the engine's longevity.
For those of you who have already modded your Z06, what would you say are the absolute 'must-have' performance upgrades to start with, and did you run into any cooling problems after adding more power?
I'd actually suggest a different approach - honestly, if ur looking for the best bang for your buck and want to keep it reliable, I'd stay far away from a pulley swap for now! I'm still kinda new to the LT4 world, but I've been reading so many horror stories about heat soak ruining the fun once you bump the boost.
Before you spend $5k on power, you should reallyyy look into the LG Motorsports Super Cool Z06 Radiator and maybe a better intercooler setup. I mean, what's the point of 750hp if the ECU pulls timing after two minutes of spirited driving?? Since ur budget is tight, maybe just start with a solid custom dyno tune and the DSC Sport V4 Suspension Controller to actually get the power to the ground better! It's amazing how much faster the car feels when it's not fighting for traction or overheating. Just be careful with that warranty though! lol good luck!
Seconding the recommendation above! Definitely skip the boost for now and grab the Granatelli Motor Sports Male to Female Expansion Tank to keep those temps down, ngl it's SAVED my engine on hot track days. gl!
Honestly, been there and unfortunately, heat is gonna be your biggest enemy on the C7 platform. Before you touch power, you gotta fix the cooling because heat soak basically kills your gains after one pull. I started with a bigger radiator and some expansion tanks from Cordes and honestly, it made a huge difference for track days. If you're looking for power on that $5k budget, just go with a cold air intake and maybe a flex fuel kit from any reputable brand like DSX. Running E85 is LITERALLY the best way to keep things cool while bumping up the boost without blowing your budget... but yeah, definitely prioritize those cooling mods first or you'll just be disappointed when the car pulls timing.
Honestly, stick with the AFE Momentum GT Pro 5R Cold Air Intake System and a Tony Mamo Ported LT4 Throttle Body first... i had issues with heat soak after just one pulley swap, so dont rush into boost without a better heat exchanger right?
