I recently picked up a 2022 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab, and while I love the height, my family is struggling a bit to hop in and out. I’m looking for some solid side steps or nerf bars that can handle daily abuse. Since I live in a snowy climate, rust resistance and a non-slip surface are my top priorities—I don’t want anyone sliding off when it’s icy. I’m personally leaning toward a textured black finish to match my trim rather than chrome. I’ve looked at some oval steps and even those power-retractable ones, but I’m worried about the long-term durability of the motors. What brands are you guys running on your rigs, and which ones offer the best balance of style and sturdiness?

honestly, avoid power steps in the snow—they're a total nightmare and fail constantly. what's your actual budget?? and do you need a wide stepping surface for the kids or just something slim?

For your situation, I'd definitely go with some rough-textured steel nerf bars. I'm kinda new to truck mods, but I've been running some Go Rhino ones on my rig and they're basically tanks.

* Textured powder coating: way better grip than chrome when it's icy.
* Steel construction: handles the daily abuse and salt pretty well.

I mean, those power steps look cool but I've heard the motors fail in freezing temps. Better to stick with something solid tbh!! gl!

I went through this last year with my Silverado... basically had the same worries about the icy winters here. I was super skeptical about the motors on the AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series so I ended up sticking with some heavy-duty fixed bars instead. Honestly, I've tried many setups over the years, and technical-wise, the n-FAB EpictX Nerf Step System has been a beast.

* Texture: The powder coat is legit grippy even when soaked in slush.
* Tech: They use a 1.75-inch tube diameter which is plenty for a Crew Cab.

Still, I kinda wonder if anyone actually has long-term data on those motor seals?? peace

Quick question - are you planning on doing any off-roading or is this mostly for the driveway and parking lots? I ask because if you're hitting trails, ground clearance becomes a huge factor with side steps.

But yeah, I feel u on the icy winters. Over the years, I've tried many setups and for a budget-friendly but tank-like option, you should look at Tyger Auto TG-AM2C20248 Star Armor Kit for 2019-2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab. They're basically rock sliders with steps, so they're super sturdy and have that textured black finish you want. Another solid value pick is the Westin 21-534715 PRO TRAXX 5 Oval Step Bars in Textured Black Steel. They have deep treads which are honestly a lifesaver when things get slushy.

Both are way cheaper than power steps and won't leave you stranded when a motor freezes up in January! Let me know about the clearance thing and I can narrow it down. 👍

Regarding what #4 said about "Quick question - are you planning on doing any off-roading", that is a huge factor. You gotta be careful because if you get something too low, it'll just catch on snow banks or curbs. I would suggest checking the mounting brackets specifically... sometimes the bars are stainless but the bolts are cheap steel that'll snap after a couple salty winters. Just curious, are you looking for a wide flat board so the kids have more room to step, or do you prefer the individual hoop style steps? I'm always a bit paranoid about the kids slipping, so make sure you look at how the actual tread is attached to the bar too.
