Hey everyone! I just picked up a brand new Lexus NX 350h and I'm absolutely loving the ride so far. The hybrid efficiency is incredible, but I’m already planning some outdoor adventures and realized I’m going to need some extra storage space. My NX came with the flush side rails, but no actual crossbars, so I’m looking for the best way to get my gear up top.

I’m mainly planning to haul a Thule cargo box for camping trips and occasionally a couple of mountain bikes. I’ve been looking at the official Lexus OEM bars, but I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding the height and how they look. My two biggest concerns are wind noise—I really want to avoid that annoying whistling at highway speeds—and how the bars might impact my MPG, which is one of the main reasons I bought the hybrid in the first place! Also, if you have the panoramic sunroof, did you run into any clearance issues with the mounting clamps?

I’m torn between sticking with the factory parts for a guaranteed fit or investing a bit more in something like the Thule WingBar Edge for a lower profile. For those of you with a second-gen NX, which crossbars are you running, and would you buy them again?

TL;DR: I compared Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar RS-Series vs Yakima RailBar Crossbars. Rhinos mounting felt safer for the pano roof, while the Yakimas are way more reliable for heavy boxes. Both beat OEM stability!!

In my experience, if youre trying to save ur MPG and keep the noise down without spending a fortune, you should look into the Yakima aero setups or even some of the higher-rated generic "wing" bars you see on gear sites. I think the key is finding something with a dedicated T-slot. Not sure but IIRC, the pano roof on the NX can be real finicky with the low-profile stuff. If you use the tilt feature, those mounting clamps for the cargo box can actually scratch the glass if there isnt enough gap. It's a HUGE risk if you arent careful.

I remember being in the same boat with my last hybrid. I wanted that sleek look but didnt wanna pay the "Thule tax." I ended up with a mid-priced set and honestly? The secret to the wind noise isnt the bar itself, it's the rubber stripping. Most people forget to install the under-fillers and that's where the whistling comes from. Basically, if you seal it up right, even a $200 set feels high-end.

Regarding the MPG... keeping anything on the roof is gonna hurt. I usually see a drop of about 2-4 mpg once the cargo box is actually on there. My tip? Get bars that are easy to tighten with a simple hex key so you can just pull them off when you dont have a trip planned. It's SO much better for your long-term fuel costs. Plus, it keeps the seals on your rails from wearing out too fast. Just my two cents! 👍

yo congrats on the 350h! i'm still learning but super satisfied with my setup. if ur looking to save cash compared to Thule, check out Snailfly Roof Rack Cross Bars for 2022-2025 Lexus NX. they're only about $160!

Check out etrailer.com for fitment videos. basically, the wing-shaped aero profile on these wont tank ur mpg like the bulky OEM ones... been using mine for months with no complaints!! gl

Just saw this thread. You might want to consider the Malone AirFlow2 50 inch Aluminum Cross Rails if you're worried about the pano roof. Be careful with those super low bars because the air pressure between the glass and the bar can cause some weird whistling if you don't get the placement right. The Malones have a specific teardrop aero profile that's meant to keep the air attached longer, which reduces that vacuum drag that kills your mpg. I actually did the install myself and spent way too long checking the torque specs with my Tekton 1/4 Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench to make sure I didnt crush the flush rails. Funny enough, while I was under the car checking the rail mounts, I noticed a tiny scratch on my wheel well and spent the next four hours detailing the entire undercarriage. I honestly forgot I was even putting a roof rack on until my neighbor asked if I was planning on living under there. My back still hurts lol. Anyway... TL;DR: The Malone AirFlow2 setup is great for aero and noise, just make sure to test the sunroof tilt slowly before you tighten everything down.

sooo i actually tried the factory ones first but honestly? i wasnt a fan...

* Lexus OEM Roof Rack Cross Bars PT278-78221: too loud and killed my mpg
* Thule WingBar Edge: way lower profile and quieter!!

unfortunately the OEM ones sit super high which looks kinda weird. anyway... the Thule WingBar Edge for 2024 Lexus NX is definitely better for the panoramic roof clearance. plus way less whistling! gl!
